A Change In Modpack
What does that mean? You've all heard of the famous tekkit, popularized by the infamous yogscast and played by mod lovers world wide. Often hated on for it's lack of permissions tekkit has quickly taken the minecraft world by storm and even has it's own section in the PMC server area. But is it the only modpack out there? No. Is it even the right modpack? Possibly. I'll let you figure that out for yourself.
What other packs are out there?
The two major mod packs out there are doing pretty well. Unfortunately they don't have a spot here on PMC. Yet. The first one is definitely the more popular of the two. It's called feed the beast. You can find it here: http://feed-the-beast.com/ The second pack is called the ATLauncher. It's not quite as popular among people just starting out. However in the community of people that already understand how to install minecraft mods and really work those configs it is incredibly popular. You can find it here: http://www.atlauncher.com/
Which of them is best?
I don't want to say outright "This one is the best, all the others suck completely." since 1) That's just mean. and 2) They're all good in their own right. So I made a nice little pros/cons sheet to show what's good about each one and what's not so good about each one.
Tekkit:
Pros:
- More let's plays to help you understand how to use the mods.
- Allows you to make and distribute your own modpacks through it.
- Active forums to help and troubleshooting.
- More servers than other modpacks.
- Does not ask permission for mods.
- Updates not as consistent.
- Forums are not as friendly.
- Some packs have notable exploits to help players cheat.
Feed The Beast:
Pros:
- More organized Let's Plays.
- Supported by modders.
- Less buggy than other modpacks.
- Always on the latest minecraft version possible.
- All modpacks are tested thoroughly.
- Fun survival maps created by and for mod users.
- You can create your own private packs that can be accessed by anyone through inputting a code in the launcher.
- New mods can easily be added to the packs.
- It usually takes a bit of time for them to get to the latest minecraft version.
- Not as much openness for new mods.
- Separates mod packs into gregtech/non-gregtech mod packs.
- Not as many servers as tekkit.
Pros:
- Has more mods than any other mod pack launcher.
- Can have ANY mod in the launcher regardless of permissions because of the way that the mod pack gets the mods.
- New mods can easily be added to existing modpacks.
- Interesting forum for troubleshooting.
- Their forum is probably the best for troubleshooting. It takes cares of problems with the packs the quickest.
Cons:
- Has the smallest community out of the three packs.
- Has the least amount of servers out of the three packs.
- Requires a small amount of manual labor to install mods.

Now that you know the pros and cons of each mod pack launcher, which one will you choose? Clearly they all have both good and bad things. While FTB has the most good things about it, it also has a good deal of bad things going on with it as well. It all depends on what your style of play is and how you like to play your game. It's all up to you.
