THE QUESTION:
Have you ever wondered why Minecraft has become so popular? The answer is quite simple really. Think about what Mojang does compared to the other companies.
THE ANSWER:
The reason Minecraft is so popular compared to other games is simply because it updates frequently. Not only that but has a stable fan base, nothing like COD where a bunch a 5 year-olds are noob tubing you. Minecraft updates there content which makes others want more of it. It is a chain reaction simply because of the updates and fan base. Now I know you guys will say that 5 year-olds play this game too. But they don't have guns to spawn-kill you. Minecraft has so many updates! They have a snapshot that comes out once a week and gives a sneek-peek at the major update. Notch has created THE billion dollar game and now Jeb continues the legacy. I thought this Blog would give good information so I wanted you guys to see it.
MODY'S OPINION
I also think it is because the of opportunities you can use this program for. There are not many games that have such customisability. How many developers will let you edit the the source code, let alone look at it, and let you publish it and make money off of it? There are whole sub-communities based off of Minecraft because of this.

Another reason that it is so popular is that is has made a particular genre of games popular, known as voxel (literally meaning 3D pixel) based games much more prominent. There were many voxel based games before it (such as Infiniminer which Notch has admited he based Ideas for minecraft off of) but Minecraft popularised it.
Minecraft has become so popular that it has spawned a multitude of other voxel based games. But because of this any game that has similarities to it can be critisied as copying or 'leeching' off of Minecraft's popularity (as I'm sure some games are).
