for all of you people who are having problems with minecraft it is because the whole minecraft universe is messed up because of 1.3.1 that came out today. there are no 1.3.1 servers up so far. (except for some sucky ones.)
so no one wants to update yet but some people want toay on servers but cant because of the biggest minecraft update so far. so for al of you paople who have 1.3.1 either stick to 1.3.1 and explore it or switch back to 1.2.5 and update back to 1.3.1 when the servers you play on start running 1.3.1
