Every minecraft house shouldn't just be built up. Although it looks better it's got less defence.

Most minecraft houses should have some form of protection. My faveorite way of protection is digging a celler, Making a bed in there and putting a chest room, Make the cellar from cobble or other stone. this will provide shelter from most mobs and Storms.

Storms, I love them in minecraft. Really realistic in ways. but when you have a wood house. Be prepared. Be sure that you have an indoor farm too, This may look ugly but usefull when hiding from elemental creepers in your basement.
