What's most magical about the Egyptian culture is their belief in an after life. They believed that upon death, the person passes through an underworld (Duat) where they would be judged. This is why they mummified their people - to preserve the body for the life after.
All vital organs were removed during the mummification process and placed in individual containers known as canopic jars. The heart was left inside of the body so that it would travel with them into the afterlife. Upon death in the underworld, they would face judgement by the God of the dead,
Anubis. He weighed the heart on a scale with the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of order, truth, and righteousness, on the other end. If the heart weighed more than the feather, it was interpreted as the heart having more evil than good and thus not pass on to the afterlife. Instead the heart would be consumed by the crocodile demon known as Ammit.
Things like food, clothing, lucky charms (not the cereal!), games, and jewelry were included in the tombs of the deceased so that they would be well prepared for their next life.
