Description

Expert Mode
makes your minecraft survival experience much more challenging! There are a lot of configurable changes done to the game, and each can toggled to your needs! All tweaks are turned on by default, and some play into each other!

Version v5.4 is out! Designed for non-hardcore single player.

Regarding Multiplayer compatibility
I think my issue lies with multiplayer. In singleplayer, I honed thousands of commands to run smoothly for one player, but the @a selector effectively duplicates the amount of code several fold.

Despite my best efforts at optimization, I'm limited by the programming language, and its ineffective memory manipulation and lack of garbage collection. I'm sure that some parts of the pack are able to be improved for speed, but collectively the datapack is too large for multiplayer.

Trust me, I really wanted to show this off to my friends in a server, but alas, Expert Mode will continue to be a singleplayer only experience. I will keep the multiplayer version up to date, in hopes of my own programming getting better, or the game.

Backstory

As a veteran player from the infdev days, I've sunk a lot of hours into this game. While I've enjoyed survival for years, I found hard difficulty lacking as I got better at the game. Combined with changes to the core mechanics of the game, this issue eventually led me to use command blocks to augment my vanilla experience. With the release of datapacks, I'm now able to share my expert mode, with all of you!

Future Plans

1. Add more cauldron recipes
2. Add more mechanics to crossbows
3. New content!

How to Install/Configure

You can essentially drag and drop what modules you want into your datapack folder. Be sure to install the resource pack as well. Regardless of what modules you decide to use, Expert Mode Core must be installed to use the data pack!

That would make sense, as this datapack is for 1.16.5, and not for the 1.17 snapshots.

If you're wondering why there hasn't been an update in some time, I haven't felt the need to explicitly add anything to the pack.

The multiplayer version is currently very laggy and buggy... It's going to be a long process before it's really playable.

5.3 will bring ambient sounds to your survival experience! I just fleshed out the biome detection system, and I'm currently working on a biome transition system. After that, it's all just population of the 35 - 50 tracks I have planned. Nothing that will inherently make minecraft feels less like minecraft. I might just merge it away from the datapack... we'll see!

The guide video has been stalled in production. If I get some time at the end of this week I'll try to release it. As for multiplayer, I'm really busy between school and trying to pay rent. I don't think I'll be able to release an update for the pack in the next few weeks. If you have any direct questions regarding the pack, I'll answer them.

I'm almost done with it! I have a changelog... somewhere. With the amount of changes, I might just have to completely restart the changelog. And I'll post an update video for all the information. Much of the code has been completely rewritten.

I'll probably release a few updates after the big v5.0, as I continue to refine and add new content.

Thirst... is... in this datapack? It has been, for over a year now.

Temperature is something that I'm not looking to add to minecraft survival. Such a task, would also be too complex to run smoothly, on top of the existing framework my datapack uses.

There is however, a huge update coming for this datapack in a few days. I hope you have the chance to try it out!

The Enderman tweak works properly while stationary but not when moving. The cause of this is due to the execute command running unconditionally, making it difficult for the game to move them due to the teleport running each tick.

execute as @e[type=minecraft:enderman] at @s facing entity @p eyes unless data entity @s AngryAt run teleport ^ ^ ^
Using this will cause an enderman to only look at the closest player while their AngryAt NBT tag has no data.

I am having fun with the new challenge this pack brings and is a great addition. Hopefully you'll be able to create some great updates soon!

I'm glad you're enjoying the pack! I'm almost done with the 1.16 update, and I've actually gone back and rewritten large portions of the code from scratch. The next update will be a lot less unstable and buggy, and issues like that enderman feature have been fixed. I'm currently bugtesting all the features, and adding some new crafting recipes to the progression. I've just recently learned how to implement custom model data, though I don't know if I'll be able to incorporate it in the next update. Maybe down the line! The day that NBT crafting is possible, the day my pack lowers in complexity tenfold.

I'll keep you posted, and hopefully I can release some sort of video alongside the update, as an updated guide.

Hmm an interesting question. Ideally in the future I'd create an uninstaller. You can follow these steps:

1. Remove all Expert Mode modules from the datapack folder.
2. Unequip the resource pack.
3. Run the following commands:
/kill @e[type=armor_stand]
/scoreboard players @s reset
/worldborder warning distance 200000000
/execute as @e run team leave @s
/gamerule doLimitedCrafting false
/gamerule doMobSpawning true

Great to see you back to updating the pack! I've been messing around with the new armor progression and it seems likes its not fully realized. The idea of having the armor behind mobs you kill could be a good way to prevent players from quickly progress the system but I really enjoyed the old progression system. From leather armor being the first basic armor that you hold on for a while, to upgrading from chain-mail with magma cream that you acquired from delving into the nether to a totem of undying for gold armor. I especially loved the sea lantern in the iron armor to promote going to ocean monuments. I do understand that the progression is a bit weird, especially with the nether update coming up, I still think the old system of physically needing materials for armors was a great idea that really shouldn't be abandoned. Having the original armor progress system while you fully function out the newer system would personally work better as the current armor progress seems way less rewarding and even broken as you could just craft iron armor as soon as you acquire iron. All in all, I genuinely look forward to every installment of your pack and always must have on while playing, its just such needed changes to a game I could breeze by with no sense of accomplishment or challenge.

I've updated the pack to 3.2, hope you enjoy it! I have a few ideas for 1.16, and just in general as well! It's great to hear that you use the pack. While I haven't restored the physical items to the crafting recipes, I have however, balanced the difficulty, so that the magma cubes are needed for chainmail, and the elder guardians are needed for golden armor.

The limited crafting should be working with this update as well!

I would say yes, except I just spotted a huge problem with the datapack. The limited crafting isn't allowing players to craft any of the custom recipes I've created.

Addressing this issue ASAP. Next update, probably tomorrow, will have major bug fixes, a buff to crossbows, and a grappling hook!

EDIT: In my worry to fix things, I just stayed up some more and released the update. Please update your datapack asap, thanks, and enjoy!

I'm currently updating the single player version! The update should be out soon! Multiplayer is on hiatus until I can figure out some changes to the code. I will also probably release a new guide video soon too, as it's becoming more and more outdated as my pack gets better.
