Description

Veteran Difficulty aims to create a much more challenging and rewarding way to play survival, while staying true to the vanilla experience.

Backstory

As an experienced player from the infdev days, I've sunk a lot of hours into this game. While I've enjoyed survival for years, I found hard difficulty lacking as I got better at the game. Combined with changes to the core mechanics of the game by Mojang, this issue eventually led me to use command blocks to augment my vanilla experience. With the release of datapacks, I'm now able to share my veteran difficulty, with all of you!

This is a spiritual success to my older datapack, Expert Mode.

Future Plans

1. Add more functionality as I familiarize myself with the 1.19 update!
2. Continue to playtest the pack, and balance accordingly.
3. Fix any bugs reported or encountered.

Full List of Changes

Mechanics

Alive Mobs:
Hostile, neutral, and passive mobs alike, as long as they are not considered undead, will regenerate a small amount of health over time.

Armor Progression
:
The crafting of armors are progressively unlocked through completing explorative and combative goals. In addition, armor cannot be repaired in the inventory.

Armor Set Bonus:
Wearing a complete set of armor from the same tier will grant a powerful bonus to your total hit points. The buff increases with better equipment, and works with each version of the elytra.

Armor Weight:
Each tier of armor will weigh you down slightly more. A full set of leather armor will only slow you down by two percent, while a full set of netherite would impact you by twelve percent. Individual pieces of different materials will provide a mixed percentage.

Broken Glass:
Breaking glass blocks or panes without shears, will hurt the player.

Blasting Furnace:
Gold, Iron, and Netherite armor & tools will reduce down to ingots.

Bundles:
Bundles have been enabled, crafted with string and leather. An early game solution to inventory management.

Campfires:
When placed, they will be unlit. All usual methods of starting a campfire work, alongside using firestarters, a new item. Lit campfires will burn for about 10 minutes, and then go out again. Lit campfires will provide a minor regeneration effect.

Crossbows:
Crossbows have been changed, as their attacks are much more accurate. This small modification completely changes the playstyle between bows and crossbows! Holding a charged crossbow will briefly hinder movement.

Deep Dark Waters:
Swimming in water below y=32, in light level 0, will give the player the blindness debuff!

Disguised Illusioners:
Very rarely, a strange wandering trader will roam the overworld. Lacking any llamas, this deceiver will track the player and reveal themselves to be an illusioner!

Expanded Foods:
Adds several vanilla lite foods to the game, filling in a certain lack of choices.

Golden Tools:
Infuses the enchantment of golden tools and armor with magical power! This buff allows the gold tier to be a serious step in your adventure!

Increased Hunger:
Players will become hungry more regularly, which will make starvation a real threat. This makes both food production and varied nutrition important throughout the game.

Insomnia:
Allows you to set your respawn point, ward off phantoms for three days, and clear storms, but not skip the night in beds. Forces players to experience the night again, prior to beta 1.3.

Last Seconds:
As another use for echo shards, this item combines them with a clock. This mystical item rewinds time to your respawn point, at the cost of your experience, nutrition, and life. Hardcore friendly.

Life Experience:
Grants extra health as you gain experience. Gain one health point every 25 levels, with the maximum achieved at 100 levels of experience.

Nutrition:

Players will start with a base value of nutrition in several food groups; fruits, proteins, vegetables, grains, sweets, and water. Eating or drinking certain foods will raise the specified groups, which will affect the player's health. Respawning will reset your progress, so dying is not recommended.

Path:
Players and other entities will gain a slight movement speed buff when traveling on top of dirt path blocks.

Poison:
This status effect is now lethal. Don't go down to half a heart!

Regrowth:
Saplings, mushrooms, fungi, wheat seeds, beetroot seeds, carrots, and potatoes will plant themselves if left on the appropriate block, as an item. Additionally, wheat seeds will cause grass, tall grass, and flowers to grow if left on grass blocks.

Renewable Ender Dragon Egg:
After the Ender Dragon is fought again, a new egg should spawn on top of the portal to the overworld.

Shields:
Using a shield to block damage, will give the player a debuff to attacking and mining for five seconds.

Tool Progression:
The crafting of tools are progressively unlocked through completing explorative and combative goals. In addition, tools cannot be repaired in the inventory.

TNT:
Punching TNT will ignite it, similar to how it worked prior to Beta 1.7. You may however, use shears to remove the block safely.

Unbreakable Tools:
Tools will no longer break when brought down to a certain point. This safeguards your hard work as you advance through the pack, and gives extra incentive to repair tools using the anvil. This does not apply to armor, elytra, or miscellaneous tools such as shears or fishing rods, etc.

Undead Horses
:
Riding a zombie horse will make zombies friendly to you, whereas riding a skeletal horse will make skeletons friendly to you.

Upgradable Elytra:
Using a smithing table, you can craft hardened elytra with a netherite ingot to grant it armor effects. Crafting void elytra follows the same vein, granting a powerful buff.

Void Gateways:
This craftable portal allows for travel between the nether and the end, which in turn allows for easy travel between anywhere between the end and the overworld. However, the portals only allow players through.

Void Tools & Armor:
An end themed final tier of items, each piece grants an additional effect.
Pickaxe: Mines incredibly fast.
Sword: Attacks significantly stronger.
Axe: Chops quickly and attacks significantly stronger.
Shovel: Digs quickly.
Hoe: Speeds up time when held, but slows the player.
Helmet: Lights up dark spaces.
Elytra: Prevents damage from flight.
Chestplate: Regenerates your health when down to one heart.
Leggings: Attracts nearby items on the ground.
Boots: Allows for crouch jumping to gain more height.

Silverfish can cause infestations in stone, and may be very rarely encountered when mining.
Skeletons will switch to swords if approached, and back to bows at a distance.
Spiders gain a brief lunging attack after being hurt.
Withers are tougher, invincible if caged, and calls forth an army of wither skeletons in battle.
Witches now cast short ranged magic spells.

FAQ

Q: Some of the new recipes don't make sense? I don't want to craft a repeating command block?
A: Ignore the output of those recipes, the correct item will be given to you in survival.

Q: How do I increase my hearts? Why are they increasing/decreasing?
A: Your health is tied to your nutrition. Craft a clipboard to view your stats. As you eat different foods and fulfill certain needs, so will your inner strength rise. Your health is also tied to experience, and armor.

Q: One of the new recipes requires four item frames? This doesn't make sense?
A: This is a limitation of datapacks, resource packs, and nbt crafting. Void Blocks are the intended ingredient, as their base model comes from item frames. Please don't use actual item frames.

Q: How can I get to the nether without diamond tools?
A: Complete a ruined portal, using obsidian found in chests. Or use an iron bucket to move lava around.

Q: How can I get gold tools if I can't mine gold ore without an iron pickaxe?
A: The gold ore found in the nether can be mined with stone pickaxes!

Q: Will I lose nutrition in my AFK farm / minecart system / boat system?
A: Nope! The datapack will halt nutrition loss if you do not walk, jump, sprint, fly, swim, or sneak during the last minute.

Q: I'm being overrun by an endermite colony!?
A: Use spectral arrows to attack the nests directly.

Q: I completed an advancement but didn't get the recipe?
A: This sounds like a bug, please report it to me!

Q: Will this work with other datapacks?
A: I cannot confirm this, but I'll attempt to fix what I can to accommodate.

Q: Can I use this in a server?
A: Yes! This was made for the intention of both singleplayer and multiplayer! Make sure that all players are using the resource pack!

Q: I really don't like a certain feature, why aren't there options?
A: The pack is designed to balance each mechanic, so one attribute isn't too strong or too unfair. If a feature is universally disliked, I'd rather rework it or remove it from the pack, than to allow the datapack to be picked apart.

Q: I have a question but I don't see it here?
A: Feel free to ask in the comments, and I'll get back to you soon. It might even be added here!

7 Update Logs

Update v1.4 : by Kalightortaio 06/07/2022 4:38:13 amJun 7th, 2022

Fixed a bug that did not give the player access to the chainmail recipes once copper ingots were acquired.
Added Unbreakable Tools, which prevents tools from breaking when down to low durability. This does not affect armor however.
Changed the drop rate of moss clumps from moss carpet from 1% to 3.33%.
Moss carpets no longer drop themselves when broken with any tool.
The Allays, Turtles, Tadpoles, Frogs, and Warden all have been added to the Alive Mobs list.
Changed the drop table for the Warden, drops echo shards instead of sculk catalysts.
Shulk Catalysts can be crafted using echo shards, sculk, and bone blocks.
Added a new food, sculk growth. Grants slight nutrition in every group, although it's not great for your eyes. Is this what the Warden eats? Very filling, but eat at your own peril!
Added a new item, Last Seconds. As another use for echo shards, this item combines them with a clock. This mystical item rewinds time to your respawn point, at the cost of your experience, nutrition, and life. Hardcore friendly.

More to come, as I familiarize myself with the new 1.19 content!

Realism isn't something you should tune difficulty around. Especially in a fantasy setting like Minecraft. Veteran difficulty isn't based on realism, but as a challenge for long time players of survival mode.

You can increase the amount of hearts you have in the datapack by eating a balanced diet, wearing a full set of armor, collecting experience, and with potion effects.

Huge update! v1.2 aims to balance the pack to be more user friendly. I may have to nerf the starting base health if this serves to be too big of a buff, although.

Next, I want to tackle more functionality with the smithing table. Excited for 1.19!

Might be a big ask, given that I don't know the intricacies of datapacks that add or override advancements and recipes on the scale of your own, but is there a way to make the pack work without automatically giving you recipes? It causes a lot of conflicts with a lot of other popular packs, some of which I've hodpodged together, and it makes enjoying this pack to the fullest a bit difficult.
