Land based hostile mobs move slightly faster to return a sense of danger to the night that can't just be overcome by sprinting away.
Land based hostile mobs have a larger follow range (the distance they'll follow you after they've spotted you) so it's a bit harder to run away.
These changes are relatively small, but they make mobs almost as dangerous as they were back in Alpha before sprinting was added.
