This datapacks makes it so any swords you craft has the blocks attack item component like swords back prior to 1.9

Each sword increases how much damage will be blocked (this can be changed just by changing the recipes)
  • Wooden Swords blocks 10%
  • Stone Swords blocks 25%
  • Golden Swords blocks 30%
  • Iron Swords blocks 50%
  • Diamond Swords blocks 70%
  • Netherite Swords blocks 90%

Note Swords in the creative inventory wont be changed this datapack only affects swords crafted

I am looking to add this to my current world. Does the effect retroactively apply to previously crafted swords? Or will they only be newly crafted swords in the future?

its only swords crafted after the pack is installed

it should be 50% blocked damage for all swords but it uses durability so weaker swords break fast
