This datapack changes the recipes of most tools/armor giving the smithing table more of a use. In this datapack you have to upgrade your tools from wood all the way up to diamond like how you upgrade diamond tools to netherite tools.

The first major recipe change is that the smithing table takes cobblestone instead of iron to craft making it available to get with wood tools.
Tool Progression | Upgrade tools using the smithing table Minecraft Data Pack

The next change is that only wooden tools and leather armor are craftable in a crafting table. To get the rest of the tiers you have to use the smithing table.
To do this put the tool you want to upgrade in the smithing table and the next tier crafting material to upgrade it.

Tool Tiers: Wood, Cobblestone, Iron, Gold, Diamond, Netherite
Armor Tiers: Leather, Chain (Uses chain blocks to craft), Iron, Gold, Diamond, Netherite
Horse Armor Tiers: Leather, Iron, Gold, Diamond
CompatibilityMinecraft 1.16

why is gold after iron, gold should be before iron because you find gold half the time in the new chests, and even then gold dosent break all the blocks iron can, gold is litlary just a fast stone pickaxe.

Gold is after iron because you need iron tools to mine gold

When i seen this my #1 concern was the crafting of the smithing table but seeing you changed it from iron ingots to cobblestone im relieved, however i do feel taking it just one step further and using stone or even smooth stone to craft the table would make a little more sense (visually at least) It would still be in the scope of wood tier when it comes to obtaining but makes it a bit more realistic being you are making is vastly easier to obtain. Im sure your not gonna change it and that's fine(i can on my end) At most i suppose im just giving others an alternative idea for the table recipe for thous who like me try to make recipes realistic/believable? IDK just my thoughts

FYI, you can make a simple change like this yourself in just a few seconds!

Unzip the pack. Open the folder, then data > minecraft > recipes.

Open smithing_table.json

Where it says
"@": {
"item": "minecraft:cobblestone"

swap out cobblestone for stone or smooth_stone.

Save and you're done!

This is a really neat idea, it gives the smithing table far more of a purpose, it fixes the progression issue with armor (i.e. players easily skipping most of the tiers), as well as leather armor being arguably harder to get than iron. My one concern is about this making iron/diamond tools easier to get, which I fear may have its own effects on the game's overall progression.

possibly, they could have it be iron blocks? It is an easy code change

I changed the recipes for myself so it requires stone, iron, and gold pressure plates. That way it costs 2 resources per upgrade instead of 1.

It balances pretty well. Tools originally cost an average of 2.2 resources each. Not quite as balanced for armor, which averages 6 each.
