The Bad Luck effect can now be caused by going near a black cat or fishing up leather boots, and can cause three things to happen.
1. When digging straight down, can replace the block 2 blocks under you with lava.
2. Trees can fall on you.
3. During a thunderstorm, you are more likely to get struck by lightning.
The higher the level of unluck you have, the more likely these things are to happen, if your level is over 100, the effect is guaranteed as long as the other individual conditions are met.
