Like it was said earlier. I would strongly recommend you don't use any online editors, sure they are easier to get, but downloaded programs have a lot more power.
A very good one (as mentioned above) is MCSkin3D. This is great for beginners, as it shows exactly what the final "3D" result will be. Although I personally also recommend Gimp.

I use minershoes.com, but I don't upload anything TO it so nobody can take my skins. I just make them and download them.

Uh, I'm saving you all, stop using Nova Skins and any online skin makers. The have this part-picking tool that lets you take a part of a skin put it on yours and give it out as yours. Which is a no-no, and you will be banned if one reports you.
So I suggest moving to Paril's MCSkin3D, its much easier.

What I was trying to say was you can use Nova skin, but not already made skin's by other people.
