Java has a lot more open source and customisable= mods/servers/datapacks etc
Bedrock is mainly for people who want to play together (crossplay and portability with mobile devices) and optimisation (so mobile devices can actually play the game).
So its like tap water vs purified water. An underexaggeration of - while theyre still minecraft, they're still different

Java is cheaper and better
I think that java lags more than bedrock and java has more requirements. If you have a good pc, then java is good but for me, java does not work but bedrock does work on my pc.
Bedrock edition is the unwanted child from microsoft. Legacy console and pocket edition were doing fine until Bill Gates joined the family and beat the crap out of them with a belt.
I used to love the legacy console editions especially xbox 360.

I think is Java is better! I WANT JAVA EDITION BUT I CAN'T PLAY IT THIS GAME ON MY SAMSUNG COMPUTER.
Java lags a lot, and anyone can hack easily in them, But bedrock is smooth and secured. But you can add more stuff on Java than bedrock. BTW java users can get bedrock edition for free
Pretty sure that Win10 edition for free offer has already ended like 2 yrs ago.
Also because Bedrock is more secured, its a lot harder to make and debug mods for Bedrock edition compared to Java.
Bedrock has optimisation and the ability to easily play with friends, but thats it.
And its opimisation apparently isnt that good (bugs can easily crash the game in BE ive heard)

Java is a little slower, but it is a lot more rugged compared to the patchwork solutions of bedrock edition. Bedrock has a lot of random game-affecting glitches that Java does not. While it is still slower than Bedrock or older versions, Java 1.16 is much faster than 1.13. You should not be experiencing any lag if you use Sodium, Lithium, and Phosphorous, a set of optimization mods that use Fabric.
As for hacking, most of what you see is not an issue of actual security. The game was built to be open-ended and allow mods, so it does not have any real anticheat and does not really track what data the player sends the server. This is true on both Java and Bedrock editions, you just might not see it as often on Bedrock.
