I've been looking around for a texpack editor that isn't Photoshop (i.e. simpler, not £600). Ideally it would be exactly like MCSkin3D but Paril tells me that there are no plans for anything like that.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

I would recommend Paint.NET. It has many tools that will help you with texturing
Indeed. Paint.Net Is Far Easier And Just Better Than Photoshop. But If You Think You Are Smart Enough To Face The Complexity Of Photoshop, Then Go Ahead.
use nova skin its all free an online based and you can draw right on the 3d models
photoshop i think is still the best though

Online editors are generally frowned upon because of their use of premade parts.

Learning to use paint.net is very useful, because it has uses other than just in minecraft stuff.
Does Gimp really have more advanced stuff than paint.net? Or do you just not know how to use paint.net?
