if the server was down your minecraft would crash
if logins are down (which they are) you cant get passes logging in

GUYS THE MINECRAFT LOGINS ARE DOWN PLASE PE PAITIANT

Just click options then "force update" then Login. Keep in mind that all your mods will be erased and you have to re-install it
The login servers are down at the moment, they'll be up as soon as the employees at Mojang can fix them! They're usually pretty fast about this stuff.
