When it says building terrain did you wait on it? It could be a huge world that needs a long time to load.

PC ONLY
1. %appdata%
2. Click Roaming
3. Click .minecraft
4. Click on Saves
5. Get the multiplayer world folder
6. Put it in the Saves folder

Enjoy!

This should work.

The reason your computer keeps building terrain and crashing is on your side. It's because your computer is not able to handle it. As others said, what are your specs?

True, but I am assuming that it is just normal blocks.
I, too did this to an old server world. So I was just showing my technique
