My computer has 16GB of RAM. (15.5GB usable) I recently tried allocating 8GB to minecraft. The error code is in the spoiler below.

Click to reveal
Invalid maximum heap size: -Xmx8G
The specified size exceeds the maximum representable size.

If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know.

Adding 8GB won't break anything, it will be a waste unless you use an EXTREME amount of mods while running some fancy-uber-amazing shaders, though.

Anyway, you need 64bit Java to add anything more than 2GB. Just download it from their official site.

The maximun is false anyways. I currently have 10G allocated. Ya know, cuz why not? I play MC splitscreen with a friend with mods installed and the ram usage gets pretty heavy, so I dedicate 5G to each client.

To answer your question, you do in fact need 64 bit java, like Searchndestroy said.

No, my computer is 64-bit but Java is 32-bit.
