RAM Maximum Heap Size
My computer has 16GB of RAM. (15.5GB usable) I recently tried allocating 8GB to minecraft. The error code is in the spoiler below.
If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know.

Adding 8GB won't break anything, it will be a waste unless you use an EXTREME amount of mods while running some fancy-uber-amazing shaders, though.
Anyway, you need 64bit Java to add anything more than 2GB. Just download it from their official site.

Max you can give is 6G, I used http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/unmodified-minecraft-client/tutorials-and-faqs/1871637-tutorial-allocate-more-memory-for-minecraft for reference.

The maximun is false anyways. I currently have 10G allocated. Ya know, cuz why not? I play MC splitscreen with a friend with mods installed and the ram usage gets pretty heavy, so I dedicate 5G to each client.
To answer your question, you do in fact need 64 bit java, like Searchndestroy said.

No, my computer is 64-bit but Java is 32-bit.

Sure thing. What about 4? Says the same thing.
