so i found a skeleton spawner in a mineshaft and i am interested in making it into an xp farm, there are a lot of caves and space around it though, should i fill in the caves and the mineshaft tunnels with blocks?

do caves near a spawner do something to the mob spawnrates, maybe i only need to light up the caves? please help

If I remember right there's nothing to influence the spawnrates, it spanws 4 mobs then wait between 10 to 39.95 seconds before make new mobs swpan. You can activate or stop it putting a redstone lamp near.

What important is the spawner only works if there's a player at a distance of 16 blocs or less.

Also, the number of entities loaded only really affects the spawner if it’s the mobs that are spawned by it are near the spawner, I believe, so you don’t have to light anything up.

Dig out 5 blocks in every direction around the spawner, dig 3 blocks below it, and 5 blocks above it. Place a slab on top of the spawner. You can then use water on one side to push all the skeletons into a 1 by 1 hole, which should be 22 blocks. Once they fall down, punch them, and they should die instantly.

be sure that all 128 blocks (height) above the spawner are lighted up or covered. Same for all the way down till bedrock. Spawning works in a certain way that only allows mobs a certain radius from a player (128 blocks) spawn. so in the place you will afk, mark the coords and light up and/or cover the 128 radius around that location!

This is only true for normal mob spawning, as the spawner’s mechanics have nothing to do with nearby loaded entities, besides the ones that the spawner spawned itself. Hope I could clear some things up.

lighting it up would be your best option, all spaces where mobs can spawn. even above the surface will improve your spawnrates.

no no, the mob spawner is still effected by other mobs. lighting up space does help. the mobs it spawns are also affected by the mob cap, can confirm as the server i was playing on had 20 people online and the rates were worse than usual

This is only true in servers that have mobcap limiting plugins (or servers that run Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, etc.). In singleplayer worlds and vanilla servers, mob cages are not affected by nearby normally-spawning mobs.

Huh, I did know that the mob cap affects it, but I didn’t know nearby mobs had any affect
