I have a server but nobody's been on since 1999. (fine nobody's been on for 2 months now). What should I do with it? Kickstart another one? I could but I don't wanna be some random server with tons of mini games. Every server has that now, so I wouldn't be special and so no one would come... Yeah any ideas for what I should? I have a budget of $400 to Kickstart it. I just need some ideas of what the server should have that's special compared to others... There's so many servers out there so I really need something creative .

How about a new PVP idea where instead of you fighting, you command an army of zombies/skeletons/spiders to fight for you. That would be very interesting.

The TNT Cannons are if you can't code the other one. They could have either redstone damage sensors or villagers scattered throughout the arena for the cannons to hit and kill.
Well this post has been dying. If you guys could please give a couple more ideas that'd be great! But you don't have too obviously if you have one more idea please say it!
Try one of those plugins that is really fun but not used on all the servers like Towny. Make sure to make the configuration unique for all your plugins, and make sure to have a really fun theme that can go into a spawn or some fun activities and events. Also keep up on bumping submissions on all server lists, especially Minecraft-MP and PMC. If you need some more help, I can definitely come up with some ideas so just message me via PMC message.

Non-pvp, no grief server. I've been looking for a good one. None so far. Either no staff will listen to me, even the owner will ignore me when I see someone hacking. I need a good server that has staff that will actually listen. :I
Oh and instead of saying "don't do PVP too common" could you maybe give me an idea?

I think you should think of a really original good idea that you think would rise you to the top of the charts, hire a Bukkit developer to make it happen (conveniently, I happen to be one), and set up a server with that. Then, if you really are willing to spend some money on this, pay for advertising. Make sure you have planned everything out, otherwise it could be a waste of time and money though.
Seems like a lot of mc server mirror each other with the same ole plugins, and gamemodes. Servers that do well are all new, and fresh custom minigames. Id say, you should really think on what type of server you want to run, and try to make it different then all the rest.
If you choose a PVP server,try to add special abilities
Example: Say you had a Spider Queen class make her/him able to summon a group of baby spiders for 30 seconds
If you had just a Archer let them be able to shoot more then 3 arrows at a time sometimes
I'm not saying you have to do these but I think they are just good to have abilities
Also have access to most kits without donating cause a lot of the good pvp servers you need to donate to get access to kits so make some kits available when you donate but have most available anyways!!

I got a lot of ideas from a server I used to moderate and put it into my own server. The ranking system is simple. The currency used was sponge. Each day you got a certain amount of sponge, and if you combined that with some other elements, you could rank up. Each rank brought new features, and you could purchase a town if you met the requirements.
Of course, you need to get a good anti-grief plugin. Be sure you hire good moderators. Don't make the mistake I once did and give the wrong person the rank of Admin.

But something with "lolOptix" in it would be nice, but if you find another creative name than that's fine as well! My old server was called FestivalMC. but that doesn't really work for PVP does it? I think anything that has to do with Optix sounds pretty good. Pretty PvPish. I have to agree with some of the other posters, the server needs a theme.
What about this:
When you first join, you begin with primitive classes in a primitive world. As you become stronger, the world becomes more developed, until you reach the highest ranks, and everyone's duking it out in the future. It can be like a sort of time travel theme.

If i should make a server then its a 'faction 2.0' server' (a mix of roleplay and factions). I also will add some origanel minigames with a weekly 'tournament' (the winner gets 5 diamonds or something like that). What also can be handy is a 'forum wall' that's a wall where you can set sings if a player have any ideas for an minigame or even better an idea for your spawn. So that's how may server will look like. Everything what i say in this comment is free to use. I never will make a server

If you are having a hard time coming up with ideas, one thing I find that helps me get my creativity flowing is actually checking out other servers. It gives you ideas on what kind of things are popular and you'll begin to see the key differences between a successful, fun server that players will want to keep coming back to, and a server that may not do so well in the long run.
I didn't realize until after I posted this that you already had a little bit of an idea of what kind of server you want to go for. And I'm still curious as to what kind of server you have run in the past. I've been a big part of running quite a few different kinds of servers, including: Survival Games, Creative, Factions/PvP, Pixelmon. And I can tell you that any type of server you choose to run will come with it's own set of problems and challenges that you will have to learn how to overcome.
One simple way to make a server more memorable and unique, is to have a theme. Have unique rank names, and builds on the server that revolve around the theme. Like on my server, the name is: Big Fish Survival. The ranks are different types of fish, and the main spawn area has a huge boat that's docked next to a huge mountain/island area, with little markets and fishing docks. Now fish was a more difficult theme to go with because of the fact that you can't really do much on minecraft that has to do with fish. Lol, I don't even know how many places I searched for fishing plugins. But long story short, get a theme going for your server. :3

Just don't make the mistake of naming your ranks donator the name of those ranks are so boring. Try thinking of something that matches the server for example. (Donate $20 and get the rank LEGEND and have the ability to fly and have a virtual chest and breath under water) or (Donate $50 and get the rank EPIC With all lower ability's and the ability to do mob disguise and can become invisible until you attack again)
