Java or Windows 10?
I’m so confused!
I thought there were two versions of Minecraft… Java or Bedrock? Is Minecraft for Windows 10 a different version altogether? I’ve purchased the windows 10 version for my laptop thinking it was the same as Java… but I’m not sure that it is?
Have I bought the wrong game? I only invested in a gaming laptop because I wanted the Java version!

This is turning into an issue.. If you can tell Mojang (or tell someone to tell them) that "Bedrock Edition" should be made official. The name "bedrock" is actually only a widespread unofficial name. Even devs use it to refer to "Minecraft" (current name of bedrock edition). I'm actually busy right now. So can't make an essay to send to Mojang.
Lol why sould I pay more money for a version without mods, Datapacks, good servers and many laggs? You even have to pay money for good maps on Bedrock!!! On Java everything is free.
Java all the way
Java has better combat
More interesting features
Way fewer bugs
More fun in a way
Better modding opportunities
You don't have to pay for maps and texture packs
Graphics are better
Java is SUPERIOR

I think in terms of graphics Bedrock is better, even without RTX. It actualy has good mipmapping and anti-aliasing. It makes all the difference!
Java 1.8 combat is almost identical to bedrock combat
Bedrock has more interesting features like: You can bonemeal sugarcane, the wither is 2x as strong, horse armour can be crafted,
yeah java has less bugs lol
bedrock is way more fun, the wither is more of an achievement, you can cross platform to most other consoles,
yeah java has better mods
Mods and texture packs are free on bedrock too, just to buy them off the marketplace costs money. mcpedl is a good website to get mods on.

(yeah ik this was 6 mothns ago i just forgot about mcpedl lol)

Okay true...
ok i personally prefer java but...

i have 3 versions xD
mobile, win 10, java
YES I KNOW WINDOWS AND MOBILE ARE THE SAME VERSION BUT THEY ARE ON DIFFEREND PLATFORMS

Same
I've got both editions, windows 10 and java. If you wanna be a pro on minecraft you'll probably need both editions to flex lol
I am a pro I guess
I definitely plan to be a pro =p
It depends on how you play Minecraft. If you want to play with your friends, I recommend Bedrock Edition. But, If you want skins, texture packs, world packs, Bedrock Edition has microtransactions (marketplace).. of course you can also get these things for free here in PMC but still. On the topic of Minecraft mods, Java Edition has really great mods while.. Bedrock Edition does has mods (they are called addons) but they aren't really as great as mods on Java.
Since you have gaming laptop, I think both versions work perfectly in terms of performance.

Implying that playing with friends is somehow better on bedrock lmao
I feel it's much better to play with my friends on bedrock. Because you don't have to setup servers. I know there are free servers for Java/Bedrock, but I feel suspicious about allowing the websites to show ads just to support the host service.
Okay then. First, to play bedrock all of your friends needs to own bedrock, which may not be a problem among younger players, but people who play minecraft for years prefer to stay on java. Secondly, I don't know what sites you used, but I was never asked to watch ads for any of my countless free servers I got, only to complete captcha. Trird and last, gameplay itself is objectively better on java. Animations, UI, movement and many other things are better, java also has endless amount of free player made content.
No advertising intended, I use Aternos everytime I want to host a server for java and play with my friends. The website asked me to switch off my disable ads browser setting to support the host service. Of course I didn't switch off the feature and I had to wait for 5 seconds before I could access my Aternos server dashboard. I have tried other free host services, some of them doesn't even allow me to proceed without turning off disable ads. I don't want to give a bad impression on these free host services, I know hosting a server costs money. Still, I prefer protecting my personal information.
Other than that, I do agree gameplay is hella lot better on Java. UI on Bedrock Edition looks very minimalistic instead of
Minecraft's pixel/blocky style, music tracks on Bedrock (not the discs) are very slow and it's almost impossible to hear if you are playing on the mobile version. As a player who have played Bedrock Edition for 8 years already, I know how buggy Bedrock is..(just like this recent 1.17.30 update which adds more bugs). In terms of content, there are also many free player made content for Bedrock Edition here in PMC and other websites.

You use aternos. That's the problem. Bedrock may have some free content, but the difference between free and paid addons/maps is monumental. The differencj in quality of java maps and mods is huge, even more than on bedrock, but at least everything is free. And you still haven't explained what makes bedrock better to play with friends.

i can relate, but because of how I play, java is better
I can’t persuade any of my friends to play minecraft… so I’m definitely leaning towards getting better skins and texture packs etc =)
Java
Also buying the Windows 10 version of Java is the same as normal Java edition :)
Java and Bedrock edition both work for Windows 10, as i have a Windows 10 laptop and i have both versions, but some shaders can get really laggy
Sure, you can get java, but please, please don't just uninstall bedrock and forget about it, that'd be a waste of money and there's a lot of ways that bedrock is actually better.
I won’t uninstall it don’t worry! It will be good to have the two, especially as my nieces all play on bedrock =)
minecraft win 10 is Bedrock minecraft
There are technically 5 platforms. Apple TV, (scrapped, but still exists) Java, Bedrock, Wii U, and Education. The main ones are Bedrock, Wich contains switch, Windows 10 edition, Xbox, PS4, and pocket edition. Java is the second platform Wich is for pc only.
isn't there also Minecraft for China lol
Yeah, I forgot about that one
Minecraft Pi Edition
Do you mean PE?
No there is such thing as Minecraft Pi Edition.
Have a look here: www.minecraft.net/en-us/edition/pi

It's helpful to have windows 10 as well because that means you can play with anybody. I would suggest looking up how to download Java Minecraft by The Breakdown and purchasing that as well.
no, windows 10 is bedrock
but java is way better, it isn't monetized as much

Windows 10 has Bedrock and Java
you can literally get everything without paying money
>skins cost money, free on java
>maps cost money, free on java
>texture packs cost money, free on java
>mods cost money, free on java
>all of the above goes through microsoft to "verify quality", so basically they choose what comes out
>server owners can monetize their servers all they want, even to pay-to-win levels, as long as part of the money goes to microsoft. though java has the same problem but inverse. wanna give slight advantages to encourage supporting the server? screw you, no money for you.
>oh, and lets not forget that they have a tos where, if you break it, you can lose access to your SINGLEPLAYER WORLDS. I understand they need a way to punish violators, but banning you from your singleplayer worlds??? shouldn't be legal if you ask me.
pardon me going all "eat the rich" here, I understand they need to make money... but first off, they're making a mint off of java sales already, and not only that but they're bloody microsoft. they're also making a mint off of windows and xbox, so why in the hell do they need to squeeze money out of bedrock for stuff that's free on java?!? I would understand if it's some indie studio, like if this was in in the early stages of minecraft I would get it, you need money to operate, but really how much is minecraft putting microsoft in the negatives with how many sales happen all the time, not only for minecraft but for windows, xbox, games for xbox, all that? I don't get it.
then to tell their server owners on java, who actually need the money, that they have to only sell cosmetics or get shut down? this is the exact reason people don't like big corporations, they want it all to themselves or no one gets anything. MULTIPLE SERVERS went completely OUT OF BUSINESS because of java's batshit crazy EULA because they couldn't raise the funds to function. yet, the big corporation that's making mints on top of mints? perfectly understandable for them to monetize and every aspect of the game on bedrock!
oh, and not to mention they add stuff to bedrock then just, never add it to java.
as a server owner it grinds my gears to no end. I don't care if I get cancelled for this, but notch should've never sold. I don't care if he said a bunch of controversial shit, I'd much rather have a good game dev that's transphobic than a big corporation that gaslights everyone into thinking they're the good guys.

There's a way to get the skins that aren't 3D on windows 10 without hacks just go in the files and import the skin bam you have there skins for free. Don't ask me where to find there folder because I did this a really long time ago and completely forgot.
Mostly true, though not entirely.
In bedrock, nearly everything goes through the Marketplace. Sure, you can import mcpacks, and such, but it's much less practical and not particularly friendly for developers or users. To boot, 90% of the stuff available for bedrock costs money. there are free things, but most (if not all, I'm not sure: I don't use bedrock edition) things in the marketplace are paid, and not usually (imo) worth the money.
In Java Edition, there is no marketplace. You want a skin? Great, press import. Texturepack, shaders, mods, map? Drag it into the .minecraft folder. One thing though, lots of the stuff available for java *is* paid, though you're not going through the marketplace. Also, the paid content is generally *much* better, just because the ridiculous limitations of bedrock edition simply do not exist. Shaders only exist on java, for example, because on Bedrock, microsoft decided not to let anyone else use render dragon, making shaders impossible. (even pocket edition shaders might not exist for long.)
As for server stuff, you might wanna look into some custom server software. Pretty sure as long as you use something that is completely coded from the ground up, not using any of mojang's code, you can charge whatever you want.
Also, uh.... Bedrock is a bit behind Java to my knowledge? Features are added to java, then added to bedrock. Obviously stuff like RTX (which is a meme at this point in the java shader community: bedrock RTX is garbage compared to even the most basic of rasterised shaderpacks) will likely never come to java (thank god) but that's simply because firstly, it's impractical: the code is different, and secondly because we don't want it.

Istg half of this was factually incorrect
I'm referring to the light blocks that only recently were added to java, but were in bedrock since I want to say 1.15? don't quote me on that, there's a few other things I think they have on bedrock only that I can't really name off the top of my head
but yeah, that's why I like java, it's way more open and less complicated to develop for than bedrock
but yeah, that's why I like java, it's way more open and less complicated to develop for than bedrock
In my opinion most of these features are pretty minor (and when they eventually do get added in Java - I always find it a bit underwhelming)
Hey. The second part of this sounds sensible enough, but honestly the first paragraph was a huge misrepresentation that was pretty stupid. I literally make texture packs for bedrock that you can download and import easily. @BigBuilds makes bedrock maps. And @VanishCraftYT makes skins that work for bedrock. So how are things only available on the marketplace?
I'm pretty sure that's only true for windows 10, so if we're only talking about windows 10, you have a point.
but if we're talking about bedrock in it's entirety, mobile, switch, playstation, xbox, every version of bedrock, then it's a different story.
I have a custom skin for bedrock, the same skin I have for java, but only for windows 10. if I want to use it on my phone or my switch, I can't. most of bedrock's platforms are like this, with windows 10 being the only exception, and only because I'm pretty sure they would've had no way of stopping it.
but even given that, it's harder to than in java if I recall correctly. I just like how more open java is, you can do almost anything with it with relative ease if you know what you're doing, in bedrock it seems like you gotta jump through way more hoops.

And android and ios can also have imports
Uhh no it’s easier to import texture packs and maps you double click a file not transfer a zip to appdata and opening a file is much easier

Yeah sorry you got the wrong one if you wanted java edition
Java of course, duh!
He's asking which version he bought.
Which is, in this case, Bedrock Edition.

Java and Bedrock can be downloaded/bought on Windows 10 (I am using a Windows 10 Laptop and I have both versions of Minecraft)
I know that.
