Need technical help pls

Hi, I've been playing Minecraft for at least two years now and i'm pretty good. I've seen a lot of people use mods on youtube but I don't know how to get them myself. Before you say anything, here's what I already know:
Put the mod file into the mod folder-this doesn't seem to do anything for me.
Have enough space on computer and have enough space dedicated to minecraft-I've already learned how to do this.
Please keep in mind that I've spent a lot of time trying to get those minecraft mod launchers to work, but they don't really work for me for some reason.
So anyways, anyone know any way to help me? There are some mods I'd really like to have.

You need to install forge before you do anything. Then ya need to create a profile with forge installed on the correct version forge is in. Then you can drag those mods in the mod folder.
Make sure you switch the version before you start or else it won't work
Use forge mod loader
