I am buying a Mac, but needing help with a few programs, Minecraft Wise.
First, texture packs. I am wondering what programs do people use to edit texture packs on Macs? Considering Paint.NET isn't available for Macs. And then the other one is screen recording. Best screen recorder for Macs. Can anyone please help with these questions?

generalcedricI record with Screenflow 3, theres a free crack out there for the program, and mabye a trial. (Its glitchy, but it can record in cimputer stuff, your mic, and your screen. Plus, you can edit your vids in the app! So easy!)
The cracked version is illegal.

Guys, mac can get virus's, but theres only a few out there...
The worst os x virus was a trojan (flashback) that got your computer to click on ad's or something, and soon after, apple accually helped to remove the virus with a update... do pc's do that xD
But lemme stop arguing, this is what i use:

I use Photoshop for pixel art, but other alternatives are gimp, perhaps pixelmator, ect
If you need to use windows programs, use wine, or install parallels. Parrallels lets you use windows/linux on you mac at the same time os x is running, so if you have a program you like in windows, just open up parrallels and install it :3

Woody239Guys, I'm one of you-- I resent Macs as well as all of you.
But the OP has made up his mind. He's getting a Mac. He's not taking second opinions. None of you are helping.
I felt that I had to re-quote this, so that people will kindly stop the flame war...
And if not, I think it's time to...

Macs suck. You must be a real spoiled person to buy one.
1
Um, you don't buy a Mac. You buy a PC.

Okay, so your other option is get a crappy PC full of viruses that will break in a year.
Macs can get viruses and unless you download a bunch of 'stuff' (We all know what I'm talking about here) you won't get a virus on a pc, especially since there's plenty of free virus prot. programs.
Macs are too expensive for their price point.

I never had a virus on my PC. And my PC is two years old and running fine.

Use camtasia 2. It is 200$ but has a free 30 day trial that you can renew multiple times

Of course this would turn into a flame war...

Don't buy a Mac! For that amount of money you could get a really fast gaming-pc.
1
Or you could get a really fast gaming Mac with no viruses that will actually last more than a year. I have 2 Macs and a gaming PC. The PC is absolute crap. Do you have a Mac? If you do not, don't tell other people not to get something that you don't have experience with.

Xyifer12Woody239 It's a bit more advanced than Paint.NET
Last time i used gimp it was far worse than P.N, when did it get upgraded?
It's got a few fancier tools, and it's a bit harder to find all of said tools. Paint.NET could be operated by a toddler. Gimp took me a few days to learn where to find all the tools, and how to use them.

@OP,
I don't own a Mac. But I know that Gimp is available for it. It's a bit more advanced than Paint.NET, and the key bindings (for example, on Paint.NET, "b" would auto-switch to the brush tool) are different on Gimp.
My friend, who records on his Mac, uses Quicktime player, with a separate game-audio recorder. Then he pastes the two audio tracks to play together. It just takes a few extra minutes to edit the video. Sadly, I don't know the in-game audio recording program is, nor do I know what program he uses to edit.

Use iMovie, which is really easy, or try the trial of Final Cut Pro. It's used to edit feature-length films and is really professional. I have 2 Macs and a gaming PC, and I know you won't regret it. Get a good one, and you won't have ANY lag

That's when the angel named Woody flew in! Finally, somebody who's not spouting the same garbage as everyone else.

ThePixelPonyIf you want some good advice, build your own PC.
This.

You can spend 5,000 dollars on a mac and get the same specs as a 1,000 dollar PC. Build a pc on pcpartpicker.com

Hey. I have a Mac and regret getting it; you will too (eventually). If you want some good advice, build your own PC.

Don't waste your time with a mac. Go on pcpartpicker, make a windows pc, and save yourself a truckload of money to get a nice headset.

Oh gosh why do ppl buy like 1000$ macs when they can get a pc thats 1000 times better...

Photoshop is best for texture packs by far. But if you cant afford it, Gimps free and it works well too.
Quicktime is OK for recording, I personally use camtaisa studio, That ones good.
I've been hearing that OBS is great!, If you can figure out how to use it
Imovie is GREAT for editing that either comes with the mac, or you buy it from the apple store.
I got mine with garageband and IMovie pre-installed...

I don't own a Mac, but I know that Macs aren't made for gaming. So, if you can't get a PC what I suggest is only playing/recording low-mid-end games. Minecraft will be just fine, but games like Call of Duty, Battlefield 4, Crysis 3 etc will have a hard time running. Also, for texture packs, you can use GIMP and/or Photoshop (if you decide to buy it or use a trial, because you can't pirate it on Macs, can you?). For screen recording I would recommend watching this video and choosing the best that fits for you (even though I think that QuickTime would be just fine).
1
You just use quick time player, select the microphone when you clicked record screen right before you record to record audio too. My friend use a mac too but he says it's really laggy whenever he uses quicktime player, so screen flow is suggested.
1
I have a very good solution for you! I also have a mac but I like using windows to do other things that aren't on mac, so there is a program call "Parallels" it basically gives you windows for mac, just Youtube it! But it does not delete anything on Mac OsX!
1
I own a Mac, and had Parallels on it (i have since uninstalled it). It is a limited version of Windows, in that one, it can only access part of your processing power, and it is very difficult to install some software to it. I use a 3d modeling software that should run on Windows 7, but Parallels failed to recognize the software. If you want to go down the "best of both worlds" route, i would suggest using Bootcamp, which partitions your hard drive, and runs Windows as a separate unit. It allows you to use all the processing power of your Mac and use Windows to its fullest capacity. The only downside is that you have to restart your computer to change sides, but given the problems i had with Parallel, it is well worth it.
1
I have to agree with this. After reading some articles about Windows on Mac, Boot Camp was my favorite. Even VMware Fusion is better than Parallels except in gaming. So, if you want to game a lot, you should go with Parallels but for anything else, choose between Boot Camp and VMware Fusion.
1
I use quick time player for both recording my game and mic.
For editing I use iMovie and for editing textures I use Photoshop.
I use these programs on a MacBook Air (The newest one) and they work fine.

I would not recommend buying a mac for gaming, just don't.

Oh, and to answer the question, I would highly recommend Gimp. The old 3 window version, not the new one made to be easy to use

Urm no Macs can get Viruses and pretty much the same amount of viruses that you can get on a Windows PC.
1
Macs can get viruses.
1
My Mac got a virus once #oops
1
but not as often because people make more virus for pcs because of macs price or something like that
1
It is not because of the price it is because not as many people use macs.
1
Actually its the amount of stupid people using Pcs.
Smart people buy macs because they are for design and more artistic stuff and stupid people don't do that kind of work.

Quicktime isn't bad, provided you modify it. Stock, it can't record any audio from your computer like game noise, so if you do get a Mac (typing this from an Early 2011 MacBook Pro running Mavericks), download "Soundflower." There are a few tutorials for it, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPdRkU_nEow Anyway, my Mac has handled MC fine, even when recording. Doesn't matter that Quicktime has limited editing capabilities. That's what iMovie is for.
1
Exactally what I do
1
Quick time has limited editing tho
1
Can you give me a description on what you mean by that?
1
Ok, thank you. I gotta wait til next week til I get my mac, but thanks for that.
