Whenever I play minecraft I get terrible FPS. It ranges from 10-20 and sometimes 30 but that almost never happens. I know I don't have a ton of things running in the background(I checked) and my settings are at the fasted settings. I got optifine(tried them both) and it only helps about 5 FPS. I'm completely stuck, please help. Thanks!

Maybe add more RAM to Minecraft or install Optifine?
He's got Optifine. Read the post. And adding more RAM is going to do hardly anything.

The main thing that matters is your graphics card and processor.
The graphics card is what renders minecraft, so if you have a really bad graphics card (Onboard from 2007 or something, like the Intel GMA's), Of course you're going to lag.
Have a look on the internet for graphics cards, but make sure your computer supports them. You can't modify a laptop's onboard graphics chip so if you're on a laptop, no luck for you.
Processor also dedicates a small percent of it to rendering minecraft, with all the commands and processes. Graphics card = rendering, Processor = commands, run the code for minecraft.
Ram would only help slightly, as it's used for storing applications so when you want them they load quicker. But if you want to improve, focus on the easiest thing; Graphics card. Easy to put in/remove. Be sure to get the correct graphics card for your computer though.

CPU will come first in Minecraft. GPU does little, you don't need some amazing card to play Minecraft.

not necessarily, no. Bad computers can't have 100FPS when they have the fastest settings and all optimizations
(oh and mipmap-lvl should be at 0 then btw)

When is the last time you cleaned up your computer? What anti viruss do you have? Did you turn down your video setting in the minecraft client? Answer these questions and i would be more than happy to help you further!
You have to adjust optifine settings a lot. The default optifine actually DROPPED me about 5 FPS, but I messed around with the settings, disabled/enabled some stuff and it boosted me up from 30 to around 70. I'm not gonna go through each option, but make for "FPS" is at "Max FPS"
get a now computer,i suggest with a 64-bit prossesor and more than 4GB of ram(random access memory)also get a amd a6 or a10 or intel icore 1-3
What type of PC do you have? it may help also to do a "disk defrag" and uninstall any unnecessary programs.
