In school we have been taught that speaking Danish is like speaking Swedish while having a hot potato in mouth.

Danish, compared to Swedish, is a 'round language' basiclly meaning that words that would in Swedish have a "t" sound is usually not pronounced as an actual "t".
For example:
In Swedish they would say: vinTer, putting preassure on the T
In Danish we would say vInter, putting preassure in the I. And in some parts of Denmark the words "Vinter" is pronounced: vinDer with preassure on the D.
A better rule of thumb (As the hot potato thing is a joke) would be to say: "Imagine that a Swedish person is mumbling. That's Danish"
