1st

Builder Spenskit, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... e-1965258/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 9
Usage: 8
Architecture: 8
Total: 25/30
Notes: I absolutely love the setup you have going on this one. The mural-style cutout is amazing, and you can see almost every block in any direction. You have every biome here, every Minecraft-like setup, and a few architectural design samples, which makes this entry so cool to look at. I don't really know how to suggest improvement on this, aside from adding 1.5 blocks maybe more foliage (there's a lot of space spent on the Desert & Mooshroom biomes, when I think Plains/Hills should be given a larger amount of room).

2nd

_Black_Viper_, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... w-volcano/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 8
Usage: 9
Architecture: 6
Total: 23/30
Notes: This map is perfect in terms of Usage & Style. It has exactly what the feature needs - a full presentation of the blocks, and the ability to see varying biomes and expanses that Minecraft is well known for. A few biomes are missing (swamp, snow, etc) but is nothing that can't be added later. All block types appear to be here, even snapshot ones (except hopper? is it missing?). The little buildings hidden around are cool, and I especially like the Museum thing but it could do with some internals. Needs more different types of buildings scattered throughout.

3rd

Midwatch, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... t-1256104/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 8
Usage: 7
Architecture: 7
Total: 22/30
Notes: I love the biome layout. The presentation is astounding. I love the block preview area, and there's small architectural examples throughout (some organic-like stuff, some medieval stuff). I feel like adding more styles would make it feel more complete, but as-is it's a very good way to preview a texture pack.

4th

Ghostman622, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... r-contest/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 8
Usage: 7
Architecture: 6
Total: 21/30
Notes: This impressive is absolutely amazing. I love the idea of a manor that acts as a previewer. The layout is pretty, the architecture is pretty, and it seems to have everything we need. It seems to be missing a few small things, like crops/potatoes/carrots, but that's not a huge deal. I think that it lacks different styles of architecture though (it's all wood/medieval-kinda).

5th

DarkShadowLegion, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... est-entry/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 8
Usage: 6
Architecture: 6
Total: 20/30
Notes: I love the style in this one. The idea of the split biomes, and the triangle cut so that you can see into the glass and see the areas is really cool. For the intended purpose though, I feel that being up close would be much, much more effective to see a texture pack (people like to see it up close!). There's only small tidbits of architecture, but they are very nicely made. All of the biomes & blocks seem to be covered. The block preview area is very, very nice.

ronnoc1221, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... preveiwer/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 9
Usage: 7
Architecture: 4
Total: 20/30
Notes: I really like the idea of this one, and the way it is layed out lets you easily view all of the different vanilla-style structures just by holding shift. It makes effective use of the blocks and the styles are exactly the same as they are ingame. It lacks non-vanilla styles though (modern, medieval, different types of architecture) and I feel that that's where it's really lacking.

madraver2011, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... -showcase/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 7
Usage: 7
Architecture: 6
Total: 20/30
Notes: This entry blew me away. The size of the structure is massive, and I love the way you organized everything and even used signs to note their ID/data values. You perfectly recreated the architecture of the various areas, and the outdoor area is vast and gives a good impression of what Minecraft really is about - the size. However, the size is also slightly a downfall because it's hard to see all of the different blocks in a small area without travelling. The signs on the blocks somewhat obscure the texture as well, making it kind of difficult to see sometimes.

creepy_chronich, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... ychronich/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 7
Usage: 7
Architecture: 5
Total: 19/20
Notes: Interesting concept. I really like the chests. The Egyptian architecture is different as well, but still lacks variety (there's not much else to it). The chest-biomes show off the areas very well, and the all-texture preview area is very nice.

Luxury_Creeper, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... l-contest/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 5
Usage: 7
Architecture: 7
Total: 19/20
Notes: A very interesting design. It's mostly focused on the blocks, and I must say that that section is very strong. It looks nice, although I'm not a big fan of the giant snow wall (hard on the eyes). The buildings behind the wall are nice, but kind of hidden from view. I like the diferent architectures presented though, but I feel like it needs more.

Psykoschlumpf, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... iversalis/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 6
Usage: 8
Architecture: 5
Total: 19/30
Notes: This is a very impressive entry. The texture preview section is nice, but you can't view everything from one angle which is slightly problematic, but that can always be fixed. The idea of small rooms is really cool, and does a great job of showing off all of the biomes and areas. The previewer is missing the ability to see various building architectures though, which is where I feel your biggest downbringing is.

7th

twiggsta, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... ting-tool/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 6
Usage: 7
Architecture: 5
Total: 18/30
Notes: Very nice block preview area - can't see them all in one angle, but, very organized & different than traditional viewers. There's a bit of variety in architecture, but not much. There's barely any show of even vanilla architecture, let alone other stuff like modern & medieval.

Underpants_x3, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... he-realms/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 4
Usage: 6
Architecture: 8
Total: 18/30
Notes: Pretty cool entry. It has a lot of really interesting architecture laying around. I don't get the impression that there's any real order to the map, though. It does do a good job of showing off the blocks, but it is also missing a specific area to view all the blocks in one angle.

sed11, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... k-preview/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 7
Usage: 6
Architecture: 5
Total: 18/30
Notes: Very nice show with different rooms and styles. It's very eye-appealing. I feel that it's missing architecture though; there's not much in the way of buildings or styles, and is more oriented towards only built-in/vanilla spawnables.

skipper587, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... ft-museum/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 6
Usage: 8
Architecture: 4
Total: 18/30
Notes: This one was really cool. I liked the elevator idea, although sadly redstone and all that won't work in the final product it's not that big of a deal. The floors each show really cool designs and different stuff; some are rather blank and lacking in architecture though (library, for instance). The texture preview area is very detailed, although it lacks in a few things like crops (not that that's a huge deal). Very cool!

BlueGamerzTM, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... c-contest/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 6
Usage: 7
Architecture: 5
Total: 18/30
Notes: I liked this one. The weird iron giraffe thing made me giggle. The previewing area is unique as compared to other entries, although it lacks things like flowers, etc. The biome area does a good job of showing off the different biomes, but there's no architecture or buildings, which makes it tough for people to preview them.

8th

tricast01, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... ubmission/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 6
Usage: 7
Architecture: 4
Total: 17/30
Notes: Every block seems to be used, which is a plus. I see a lot of very unique builds here, and I like how everything is layed out. I don't like how far apart everything is though; it's a pretty big journey from one end to the other.

Phrontier, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... l-contest/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 6
Usage: 5
Architecture: 6
Total: 17/30
Notes: I like the style of this map. It's very simplistic but does a pretty good job of showing off the blocks. The little crane is really neat and I like the different architectures kind of mashed up. I think that it's very barren, though, as there's a lot of empty space with nothing on it, and there are a lot of different blocks missing; there's also no specific spot to view every block in one angle.

gramoobi, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... -showcase/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 6
Usage: 7
Architecture: 4
Total: 17/30
Notes: I really like this one. It does a very good job of showing off all of the varying styles that can be found within Minecrafts' default game, and the catwalk was a nice touch. A couple blocks are missing, such as growing stages of various crops, but that's not a big deal/can be added later on. I feel that it is missing any real architectural show, though. The map is contained in a giant slow/clay box, which is an interesting idea but the contrast of white/gray is a bit hurting on the eyes, and might not be very appealing to those looking around.

ItemFramed, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... -entry-1-/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 7
Usage: 6
Architecture: 4
Total: 17/30
Notes: I absolutely LOVE the styling on this one. The cutouts slabbed against the walls are really cool, and provide a really sweet overview of a particular area without you needing to actually go into them. The layout of your blocks is very creative, and the preview area is much unlike any I've ever seen before. Sadly, I feel it lacks non-default architecture, which is going to hurt it a bit in terms of scoring, but the rest of it is really amazing. A couple minor blocks were missing (I didn't spot carrots or potatoes), and I feel that the crop area is a bit too big to show off repeated textures, but overall it's a very nice entry.

9th

SlipB, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... schematic/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 5
Usage: 5
Architecture: 6
Total: 16/30
Notes: The architecture on this one is pretty cool. Different areas with their own distinct styles. I feel though that the distance between the two areas is a big killer in this schematic (it's largely empty space). It has a lot of variety, but I don't really feel like it has a specific area that shows off all of the parts of a texture pack.

10th

Bethamez, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... e-contest/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 6
Usage: 5
Architecture: 4
Total: 15/30
Notes: Very nice build. The floating land with four separate areas is pretty cool; I think that the block preview area is a bit lacking (missing lots of blocks) and you can't see it all from one angle. The other areas do a nice job of showing off their specific subject, but it's architecturally lacking and has a lot of empty space.

11th

nawikipedia, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... d-contest/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 4
Usage: 8
Architecture: 2
Total: 14/30
Notes: I went into this one expecting something small - and I was right - but I must say, you really managed to cram a lot of detail into your tiny rectangle. I was impressed by the amount of detail that was there! While I love the layout, and you can get an entire preview of a texture pack from this, it is missing the architectural aspect that I feel this previewer needs.

12th

erikerik5, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... -reviewer/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 4
Usage: 5
Architecture: 4
Total: 13/30
Notes: Interesting idea, but there's a lot of flying/walking around to see everything. There's no easy place to see every block/texture in one angle. The cave is neat, and the small architectures that are there are cool, but there's not much to the map that makes it particularily good to preview with.

13th

TurtleXing, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... previewer/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 4
Usage: 7
Architecture: 1
Total: 12/30
Notes: Sweet and simple! This one is very traditional, and does a great job of showing off the blocks. The chair was a nice touch (+1 style for that). It lacks any architecture though, and doesn't give users a chance to see what buildings, etc will look like.

14th

Pykes, paril-unofficial-project-contest-texture-pack-previewer-t222109-72.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 3
Usage: 6
Architecture: 1
Total: 10/30
Notes: Floating texture pack! This one was pretty neat, but small and a lot of empty space. I'm not sure how best to describe it, but the way the blocks are layed out almost feels like the map is "broken" in some manner (like import failed), but it does seem like it was just designed that way. Everything is viewable from one angle, which is a bonus.

15th

EmeraldKillers, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... re-viewer/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 2
Usage: 5
Architecture: 1
Total: 8/30
Notes: Interesting concept. I think signs' text didn't save for you though; not sure if that's an MCEdit bug or not. The preview area doesn't show off all of the blocks (only a small percent) and the other side relies on redstone, which doesn't do anything in the secret project. Glowstone as floor is a bit hard on the eyes as well.

Declan, http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/ ... r-contest/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Style: 3
Usage: 4
Architecture: 1
Total: 8/30
Notes: Doesn't have any architecture, and is just some basic blocks sitting on pedestals. It works, technically, but I don't feel that people using it would get an idea of how a texture pack looks in the ""real world"" (as in, how it would feel if you put it on in their own worlds)

Contest Text
Whassis? Unofficial Contest?!!?
Hi there, everybody. It's me, the guy. I'm running a small, unofficial contest to help us create something that will be used in the near future on PMC. The reason the contest is unofficial is because this sort of contest is rather small and doesn't have that much of a reason in being a full contest. It's a short contest, judged solely by myself, and will indeed have prizes like a normal contest, but will be less "organized" than the real contests.

Who can enter?
Everybody! Members, judges, mods - if you have a PMC account, you can enter.

Can groups enter?
Yes, however, if you are going to enter as a group, please be aware of a few things; the money in Steam games will be picked by the person who has posted the project. As a result, either he must accept the prize by himself or find a game that is cheap enough for all members to be bought for. I don't mind buying a copy for each person, but the final cost must not exceed the total prize money. The credit entry will be given to the entire group.

Okay.. so what do I have to make?
The goal of this contest is to create a schematic that can show off the details of a texture pack. This may sound like an easy task, but, there are also several limitations you must be aware of - rules, if you will, as every contest has.

How do I schematic?
You must present your map as a Type 1 Schematic - MCEdit and WorldEdit both support this format natively, and are your best bet to getting it to me in that format. I don't have the time to convert every single map sent to me to a schematic, so I would really appreciate it if you guys could export it yourselves. I don't have any links to tutorials offhand, but, I'm sure they aren't far away!

So I just show all the blocks and I'm done? (AKA: RULES)
No. If you submit this kind of entry, it will be disqualified. Maps -can- contain a showoff of every block, as traditional texture pack maps tend to have, but the schematic you post must follow the following rules:

  • Your schematic must be submitted NO LATER THAN March 7th, 2013 (once it hits 7th on my calendar, EST timezone, the contest is over). This gives you essentially 2 weeks to build your awesome schematic.
  • Your map must be posted as a type 1 .schematic file. If you don't know what Type 1 is, don't worry about it - exporting via MCEdit or WorldEdit will generate a Type 1 schematic for small schematics. World maps, Type 2 schematics, and other forms of maps will not be accepted.
  • Your map must not be gigantic. I don't want to impose specific width/length limitations because people may prefer to work in a rectangle, so the limit will be a hard file size limit instead. Your final schematic must not exceed approximately 90 kb. It may sound small, but, there is a lot of room to maneuver inside this limit.
  • Your map must try to show off different architectures, different styles, different types of areas and different environments (not including biomes - schematics don't include biome-specific data).
  • Your map must include a specific area for previewing all blocks in one convenient place. This produces a nice area for screencapping and quick previews.
  • Your schematic must be your own creation, and not stolen from somebody else. As with all contests, maps must follow our Submission Guidelines.
  • You must post your schematic in the Projects section of PMC -AND- this thread. The submission does not have to include any link back to this contest, but you must post your entry here in this thread, else I will not be able to find it. I'm not that magical!
  • Your map should be up to date with the latest version of Minecraft. The later, the better - this includes snapshots. While right now the snapshots are not final, they will be pretty soon, and as such those blocks (and any new ones they may introduce between now and then) will be missing from the schematic. Please note that the 1st place winner will be asked to update the schematic if Minecraft changes in some way; if the winner is unable to update it, we will have to either update it manually or fall back to a runner up to help us keep it up to date.
  • Do not try to include every entity! While we appreciate the effort, our feature will not make use of almost 90% of the entities that Minecraft provides - you can, however, include some secondary entities that go well with blocks, for instance paintings, carts and boats. These will likely be of good use to us.
  • You gotta use all the blocks & known/standard/documented data values! Every single block that Minecraft has must be used. If you're not using the snapshot, you may exclude them for the time being. If a specific block is technical or not visible, they do not need to be shown. You do not need to show non-standard block data values (for instance, the hidden piston 6/7 data value).

Sounds easy enough.. what's in it for me?
A bucket. Full of love. And wonder.
Seriously though, yes, I am offering a bounty for this particular unofficial contest. There are going to be three places, as with our official contests.

  • First Place: Your schematic will be used primarily in our upcoming PMC feature. A link back to your profile will be placed in the secret feature, and everybody will know you are a super awesome person. Oh, there'a also $50 worth of Steam games in it for you, as a bonus for being so goshdarn awesome.
  • Second Place: While your schematic was awesome, it was missing the something-something we were looking for. You tried your best, though, and we appreciate the effort - you get to take a good $30 worth of Steam games home with you!
  • Third Place: Third place - so close, so very close! While we love your map, it just didn't have the it factor we need. On top of third place, you receive $20 worth of Steam games to play with.

Misc. stuff
If you placed one of the three above, and you don't use Steam, we will work something else out to get a prize to you worth the same amount. If you do use Steam, you have full range to pick whatever game(s) you want - if for whatever reason you don't want Steam games, the above applies as well.

Remember: try to make your submission best reflect a texture pack! Fly around it in creative mode to get a feel for how your map would look to a spectator.

A big thing with this is that the schematic needs to be, and stay, up to date - this means that when Minecraft updates, PMC needs to be at the forefront of adding the new blocks and fitting them into the schematic. The 1st place winner must be aware that while his schematic is being used by our feature, we do hope that he is able to keep the schematic up to date for us. We reserve the right to modify the schematic used by the feature to insert/remove blocks as we need to - you will always have your credit spot, but it may be modified due to an issue that was noticed afterwards.

If, for some reason, the first place winner is unable to fulfill our requirement for updating, we may fall back to a runner-up to help us keep an updated schematic. Do not worry, though, as you will still maintain all of the prizes listed including credit, but you'll be sharing credit with the runner up that will be maintaining the current schematic.

Thanks, and I hope to see some awesome entries in this contest!

You can use any version you want, so long as it's after or equal to the current stable version.

couljjWhen you say every ID, does this include all the colors of wool as well?
In other words, 100% of blocks?

Also, I'm a little confused by the purpose of this, you said you needed a schematic. Are you looking for a build that is able to be featured in a single screenshot for like a cover photo? Or more for a player to walk around and view every block?

I can't get into detail, but I'll just say the second one for now. It's not used for static shots.

antideityWould you be inclined at all to increase the cap on the schematic size at all? From what I've estimated, it'd limit the area to a 256x256x50 meter box or equivalent, and it seems hard to show off every block with that small size.

That's a pretty big block of stuff to work with. 250 kb seems to be a very good size for what I've planned.

Would you be inclined at all to increase the cap on the schematic size at all? From what I've estimated, it'd limit the area to a 256x256x50 meter box or equivalent, and it seems hard to show off every block with that small size.

And would group projects be allowed?

So essentially we're putting everything in the creative inventory into one schematic, okay.

When you say that it shouldn't include all entities, do you mean mobs or armor?

Entities include a lot of things. They're basically the items you can't place normally. This includes, mobs, armor, items, eggs, stuff like that.

Has anyone estimated how many blocks are in a 250kb schematic file?

Based on an estimate over a 10.7 million block region (rounded down), the schematic came out to 807 kilobytes.

A ratio of (250 KB limit / 807 KB sample)*(~10.7 million blocks in sample) leaves ~3.31 million blocks.

Assume we have a height limit of fifty meters. That gives us a square area of 10.7m^3/50m to build, coming out to about 66.3k blocks square area. Square root of that sum gives approximately 257 blocks per side. Mind you, I'm reporting to 3 significant figures.

To picture it, imagine a 16x16 chunk area raised 50 feet.

Thanks for that. Much easier to picture. I can't imagine my build would be even close to that size, so I should be fine.

Well, it really doesn't have to be fancy now does it?
Just need one little area for the blocks to sit in,
and one place for small architectural examples.

Nope, but obviously the more creative among you will be rewarded with more games!

@ the estimation of sizes of schematic: it is variable and depends on many factors. Each tile entity will increase the final schematic size by a considerable amount. You also have to consider that schematics are gzip compressed, so it's really hard to actually "guesstimate" how much is inside of one schematic, as it will vary based on what the block order is, etc.

Thank you

A group project should at least be interesting with this. ; Is the project going to be judged in a specific featured pack, or do we all choose our own?

The pack will be judged by its ability to show off the features of a texture pack. The texture pack being shown off is not of importance. You can develop this thing in any texture pack you want, but it will be used to show off any texture pack.

For the wall of every block should we include slabs and stairs and blocks like that? It seems like they would be unnecessary since they just reuse the textures from their respective block types...

Not really, no. Those areas are generally to see the visual style of the pack, and you are correct in that repeating textures won't be very appealing

Stairs, slabs, upsidedown slabs etc must be used somewhere in the map though.

Easiest way is get your build onto a server with worldedit then select the whole thing and type //copy, then type //schematic save mcedit. The file will then be located in plugins/worldedit/schematics. This also works if you get the single player commands mod.
