Hi, I'm new to PM and new to minecraft in general!
I started playing as I am chronically ill and its a fun slow paced game, that I can play without feeling really ill after ! But as Im new theres still a bunch of stuff I need to learn.

Welcome to the community! :D What "platform" (building, survival, PVP, etc) do you like doing the most/do you think you would like doing the most? That way I can help you where you can find what could help you with it
Thanks ! So far Ive just played survival and watched a few videos on building in creative. I would like to try joining a public server but Im not sure how yet.

If your minecraft is original it is easy. Push the multiplayer button -> Search some pleasing server on the net -> Write the name and the IP (numbers or urls) in the textboxes -> save it. Sometimes servers use some access control plugin for example AuthMe. So you have to make an inner password at the first join.
But I warn you, the open minecraft communities are not too hospitable sometimes. Sometimes they are so rude, I cannot stand them. So choose carefuly and do not trust in anybody at first sight.
