That requires software to translate IPs to UUIDs and if the goal is to determine which devices (and thus IPs to identify them with) are allowed, it's kinda redundant since we already let them in to process the IP...

Why don’t you use UUIDs instead of IPs

Incredible news (which is why I'm pinging everyone)! I just realized I made an error in judgement (and no, that's not the news XD), and I actually don't need this firewall rule like I kept on bugging y'all about. Well, technically I need one in order to let connections through, but I mean one that restricts what IPs are allowed to pass through, which I was going to use as an IP whitelist. But I noticed that if I had that and somehow made it work, wouldn't that go against my intention to have this server public and not like an exclusive club? And if I had this whitelist, that'd mean that nobody could join without first going through a test or something and thus make it no longer non-exclusive and my advertisement that anyone is welcome to join is kinda a half-lie (it's not a lie because anyone is welcome, but it's not a full truth because not everyone is mmediately "welcome" to join, because they need to go through a process first which can make it seem a bit not so welcome...ig :/).

So in a nutshell, I take back what I was saying about needing a firewall rule for the security and safety of my network. If having a server poses a possible dangerous security risk like hackers and malicious entities and malware and stuff, should I even have one at all? So no, no such security measure is needed. Not unless I suddenly get a malicious security threat or hacking attempt or something, which I don't see likely, or at least successful as I have other security measures in place already (not-lateral device traversing, DMZ with the server the sole thing in it, and a second router as a nested router acting as a wall of trees blocking sight and sound to create privacy, etc. etc.). Okay maybe not so much a nutshell but still.

    Okay second try... *inhales*

IN A NUTSHELL I DON'T NEED *pant* THE FIRE- *pant* WALL... RULE... *pant* *wHeEZe* ...THERE! *faints*

    ~LeGO

This is the same as the announcement I sent in the discord, but it was really good so I put it the same here.

Sorry to worry y'all about the whole IP sharing nonsense. I hope it didn't make you think any less of me or the server. :(

I think I'll make a poll to see if it did.

I hope someone builds something cool soon and makes a project content associated with the server. To do that, just go to the server page (link is above) and there will be a button under vote for server saying submit server project. Then just make content like normal but it'll be linked to the server. PLEASE do this instead of just making content because you can't make it linked to the server after being made, and I want to see things built in the server. :)

    Some ideas:
    - a store
    - building/construction service
    - bank
    - rollercoaster (SICK, TOTALLY DO THIS; i wanna see how big and crazy players can make it with just available resources, and totally be the first to ride it because i got priority as owner jk)
    - farm w/ barn and farmhouse and animals and stuff
    - Redstone contraption (e.g. redstone computer, but don't build something that causes excessive lag because my machine running the server is kinda old and only so fast; if you intentionally make it lag just to lag you'll be punished depending on the intensity of the lag, even up to banning if it causes a crash)
    - and anything you can think of (abiding by the rules ofc)

    Have fun! :D

To clarify, the server is up rn. I won't implement the security system with the firewall just yet, if at all. I'm still working it out.

Edit: It's been decided that I won't add one as it isn't needed afterall and actually isn't beneficial (kinda the opposite in fact). You're all good; no need to do anything with IPs anymore! :D

    man im so relieved

So, having the server down while i plan and implement a security system. I got strangely suspicious pings from some IP to the server which is harmless rn but the weird thing is that it was at a perfect interval of every 5 seconds. All the same IP but a different port about every 10 pings or so.

That's a good enough sign to me that it's time to secure the server. And that's why I'm saying this...

I've explained before that i would need to have a firewall rule to allow only registered IP addresses to connect, thus allowing the player from that address to join. If their IP is not listed, they cannot join. And if they are not willing to give me their IP so I can allow it through then they sadly cannot join.

This is the significant detail: Whether you give me your IP in order to join or I don't have the firewall so you can join regardless, I will still see your IP in the console the moment you join. So whether you tell me your IP or not I'll still have it! I should've said this to begin with. And if you're now concerned with joining at all because I'll see your IP please know that this is the case with all servers. Just the way it works. The server program needs to know where to send signals to (which would be your computer you're playing from) and where to receive signals from, as well as security things and such.

Therefore, if you send me your IP securely, preferably through a form since I'm the only one that can ever see your form response, it'll remain confidential and you'll be able to join while keeping my home network safe. I hope you want my home and family to be safe too...

If you have any questions just let me know (DM me, i won't get notified if you comment to this post unless you ping me). I truly care about the safety of both you and me/my family.

In the future I'll make a way for you to see what your IP is (referred to as a WAN IP) without having to figure it out. But for now you can go to https://www.whatismyipaddress.com/ and your WAN IP will be to the right of "IPv4:" which will be 4 numbers separated by periods (e.g. 127.0.0.1 which is localhost, aka the device you're using). When I get SSL for my server I'll have a page so you can just click a button and it'll display your IP to copy and whatnot, but rn i don't want to do that yet since it's not secure and encrypted.

    Thanks for understanding. :)

    -Lego
    Lego_Master_A2026-07-03 00:14:59
Yes but that doesn't give you your WAN IP. And not everyone knows how to use command prompt so it's not useful for the general public anyway. Glad you know your stuff though. ;)
    HazyCozmos2026-07-02 13:05:16
Or you could just open CMD and type “ipconfig”

Okay so, goodbye to Winters_Bane since through discord have declared that they hsve "grown out" of Minecraft (and therefore PMC) and so will no longer be in this server. It's disappointing and i tried my best to convince him not to quit Minecraft (i said MC isn't childish but he says it's something else) but to no avail. So to that end I'll be contacting him again to ask what he wants done with his ingame belongings (inventories, base(s), land claims, money, etc.) and once i get what his will for it all is I'll divide and transfer it all accordingly. It's sad i have to do this but he made a choice... :(

Okay so... I need to be honest with y'all. You know how i said before that I'd need to put up a firewall rule to protect my household network and I'd need the IP addresses of those who want to join so i can put it in the rule to allow them to connect? Well while that is true, AND that i am serious about my promise that i wouldn't do anything with your IP address when i receive it through the form other than to put it in the rule, I must admit that while i am well-versed in much of computing like programming and hardware (what's physically in a computer and how it all works), I'm relatively new to networking. I know some but I'm not as proficient in it as i am in the other aspects of technology.

But what I'm saying is that i am actually unsure if i truly need your IP addresses as if the firewall rule is the only way to effectively secure my network from hackers, DDOS, etc. So...

I have an idea. Now in addition to needing IP's for the firewall rule, and if everyone is okay with giving them, there's still the issue of dynamic IP addresses. This is where one network's IP may change at times depending or when the network is turned off (e.g. due to a storm) and it gets a new IP when it's back up. Now, my own server doesn't need to worry about that because i have a domain name so there's no need to give out the new IP if mine changes. But that's not the case for y'all. So rather, i have an idea I'm coming up with that'll make it both safer and feel safer to pass the IP address in order to join. Any updates i have on this idea and my development of it when i have the idea right I'll post here so be sure to stay updated, as this is important information for those who weren't comfortable sharing their IP's over the Internet.

Now i must say that it's actually a good and wise thing to be cautious to share your network's IP address, because it would actually be unwise to give it out to anyone, even though i hope people know they can trust me. :(

Okay, so to add to my statement about having to use a firewall rule to protect our network, therefore needing the IP addresses of the players who are joining, reference this: https://www.planetminecraft.com/servers/#:~:text=installing%20a%20firewall

I cannot say it any more times... It's necessary if I'm going to protect my home network. I can't have the server running without this protection because it'll open my network up to unwanted activity because i don't have that vital security layer. If y'all don't want to supply your IP addresses then I'm sorry but you cannot join. There is no other way. Any other is not secure enough, including the server whitelist (though this will still be used but not alone).

If i didn't have to request your IP addresses it wouldn't, trust me...

Alright, so, i need to be straight with y'all...

Ik some of you remember that at first you needed to fill out a form that required your IP address because of a security system i had. Well, since some of you were paranoid about giving it to me i decided to just disable that security system for some time since the server isn't as popular yet where there'd be much security risk like hacking attempts and whatnot. But now that it's more popular and i already got someone random joining, i feel it's best to put up the security again.

Now, here's the thing: i still need the IPs of those who are going to join because of the nature of the type of security level (it's a firewall rule so only the IPs specified may connect in any way to the server, so it's very important). Therefore I'm forced to put it back up to prevent security risks. That means that I'll once again need your IP address if you are to join.

Now i should say this... Whether you give me your IP through the form, or you join without giving it, I'll still get your IP because it shows up on the console the moment you join. So that being the case, any paranoia or fear you have about giving your IP is in vain because as long as you want to join you're automatically giving your IP.

That being said, I'll wait a bit after I make this announcement for y'all to read it, then I'll put up that security system again and fill in the IPs people already gave in the form in the firewall rule, after making an announcement ahead of time. Once that's in place, in order to join, you'll need to fill out the form. My promise still stands—I won't do anything with your IP other than for the firewall rule to allow it through. I take promises very seriously and would rather not make one than make one willy-nilly and fail to keep it. So please trust me on this...you kinda have no choice now. :(

Any questions or concerns you can DM me about, or in a comment as long as you mention me.

    -Lego
    Lego_Master_A2026-05-17 23:05:18
And that's why I'm making this post...

That's also why i make the promise that i wouldn't do anything with it other than for security purposes.
    SevenTheGamingKitty2026-05-17 16:25:33
I wasn't repeating you, simply marking what I was replying to.

People are reluctant to share their IP because apparently nobody understands how much info an IP address *actually* shows (spoiler alert; not a lot)
    Lego_Master_A2026-05-17 12:48:26
You don't need to repeat to me what i said. And so you already know that, ok.

And it doesn't matter which device from an IP address is connecting because there will be a mutual trust between all the users in the network (i.e. household typically), because there isn't a way to control which device in the network can connect, only the WAN IP. It's even more dynamic if I'm trying to put a "whitelist" to what ports can come through as every single session made in Minecraft (especially if you restarted Minecraft) generates a different port automatically.

And if privacy wasn't an issue then why was everyone reluctant on sharing their IP out of worry that I'd do something with it other than pur it in the firewall rule, like get their address from it so i can be a complete creep spying on them or something ridiculous? 🤨
    SevenTheGamingKitty2026-05-17 10:34:30
"The firewall rule isn't about what players can join but what networks/devices can connect. The actual server whitelist will handle what players can join."
I already know that. (The part about how firewalls work, not everything else) the issue was that it was communicated very poorly in a way that implied that the firewall rule was all that was preventing joining. and plus, it still doesn't prevent others on the same IP from doing malicious connections...

"If the privacy concern is an issue,"
it never was.... that's what i was saying :sob:
    Lego_Master_A2026-05-17 10:27:16
Okay... Sheesh. If the privacy concern is an issue, then I can handle the other two issues you mentioned: IPs changing periodically because of dynamic IP reservation, and multiple devices can connect via the same IP. The second however isn't an issue because I can "whitelist" the WAN IP of those connecting and safely allow all in that network into the server. The firewall rule isn't about what players can join but what networks/devices can connect. The actual server whitelist will handle what players can join. The firewall rule is only to protect against malicious connections from untrusted networks.

And i didn't miss the point...you did. I'm trying to say that i know what I'm doing, but I'm just trying to explain it. :(

And I'll determine how to handle changing IPs. I actually just came up with something right as I'm typing this... Hmm. 🤔
    SevenTheGamingKitty2026-05-17 10:18:47
You completely missed the point. A firewall rule OR a software whitelist will cause people to lose access to the server when their router eventually changes their dynamic IP. And additionally those using the same router would have the same IP. This was never about the security about giving an IP to you.
    Lego_Master_A2026-05-17 10:02:34
Why is everyone trying to lecture me on computer networking? If you're referring to a software whitelist like the Minecraft server whitelist for usernames but for IPs then that's not what I'm talking about, and what you're thinking of isn't as secure either. What I'm talking about is a firewall rule. That is secure, more than anything i can use. But the "cost" is that i need the IPs of those who want to connect, because it has to know what IPs to allow through, and if a connection from an IP not listed tries to connect it'll be totally blocked. So essentially it is a whitelist by IP. And the fact that they can change is not something you need to take into consideration when determining if you should share your IP with me, where i work alone, wouldn't share it (i have no use for it other than to make my security system work), and plus, I'd get your IP anyway when you join. Why is it difficult to understand that whether you give me your IP via contact methods or you join without giving it to me, I'LL STILL HAVE YOUR IP!

Trying not to be rude or mean but it's kinda getting annoying at this point. I tried explaining why i needed them and that it is safe and secure to specify the IP as long as you don't share it publicly, like in a comment on PMC, but either through the form or a DM. I won't do anything else with it; i make that promise. What more can i say to make you feel at ease? There are no other options for security! A simple Minecraft whitelist won't do anything!

And one more thing, by not wanting to be okay with a secure firewall rule where you only need to specify the IP you'll be joining from because you're worried or something, you're actually saying you don't care about my household network's safety and security. I'm doing this because i need the upmost security for my FAMILY! I don't have just another separate building just for my server. I'm not rich...
    SevenTheGamingKitty2026-05-12 17:30:41
an IP whitelist isn't secure either as 1: IPs will change and people will eventually get locked out and 2: multiple people can connect from the same router and therefore have the same IP

Okay y'all, creative is fixed! Just use /creative to enter the world and use /survival to return to the survival world. Both directions you will retain your previous location. For the creative world, unlike the survival, you need to claim land to build there; you can't just build anywhere. There's no neutral territory in the creative world. For the world layers (it's a superflat world), there's a layer of dirt (grass on top ofc), then a thicker layer of stone (raw), then an even thicker layer of deepslate, then a single layer of bedrock as with all superflat worlds, top to bottom. The spawn is at (0, 0), the origin, and there are signs in all 8 directions to help you determine where you want to build, along with each being color coded. For time and weather, it'll be like a radio queue—you can request a specific time and/or weather state and after the time for the current request is up, yours will be set, also being given a duration. The duration may change, but for now it'll be 10 minutes. Note: you aren't allowed to make two requests of the same configuration in a row (multiple of different configurations are fine). This is to prevent "hoarding" of time and allow equal opportunities for a specific time and weather for everyone, for various purposes like for a specific camera shot. There are also additional rules to the main rules which only apply to the creative world. These rules will be listed underneath the main rules and they are equally important to follow when using the creative world, and therefore will be equally punished for violations.

I know that was a lot to read but it's important if you want to build in the new creative world. I'll make a custom widget here with it all broken down soon but for now all you need to know is above. Any questions or concerns, DM me, don't comment on this as I won't get notified. Thanks!
