This jam is a competition to design the new mascot of Miners Need Cooler Shoes.

About

At the beginning of this year, the site needcoolshoes.com, also known as Miners Need Cool Shoes, went down, and never returned. Miners Need Cool Shoes provided a lovely little skin editor, with excellent layer support, as well as hosted a large amount of skins, which integrated seamlessly in the editor, and allowed for quick and effective skin creation.

Teaming with OwaHai, we have formed the Miners Need Cool Shoes Restoration Project, and have been working to restore the site to its former functionality, as well as improve it with some much needed love and attention. One of the goals we are trying to achieve with this project is re-implementing, and replacing, all of the original assets, to the point where we have made an effective clone of the site, and are no longer using copyrighted assets. I do intend to one day open source the project, when all the original assets have been replaced.

A main part of the site's branding is it's mascot. The mascot is a skin that looks like a transparency texture, wearing a blue top, black jeans, and is sporting some cool shoes. See it here. The goal of this jam is to create a new mascot for the site, which is reminiscent of the original in a way, but is new and unique for the new site.

The winning skin of this Jam will get to become the new mascot of the site. It will be used as the icon, and logo of the site, and may be used elsewhere in the promotional material around the site, such as it's social card etc. As such, to qualify, skins will need to be licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0.

Judging

Ranked by Judges - Only members of the jam assigned with judging permission can vote.
Entries can't be updated during the judge phase.
8 day entry period.
3 day voting phase after the entry period.

Rating Criteria

1. Creativity
   How unique, and creative, the character's design is. A little backstory in the Bio is always a plus too.
   Rated 1 to 10
2. Technicality
   How detailed, or stylised the art is. Good shading, texturing etc.
   Rated 1 to 10
3. Mascot-ability
   How well would this skin be able to work as a mascot of the site. How flexible is the design to be used for icons, renders etc.
   Rated 1 to 10

1) Skins must be submitted as CC-BY-SA 4.0.
2) Any editor can be used to create the skins.
3) Steve player model only. NeedCoolerShoes has not implemented Alex player model support yet, and I'd like the skin to display correctly on the site.
4) Any other skin parts that you did not create yourself, used in the skin, must be correctly licensed, and attributed in your description.
5) No skins of existing characters. We want this mascot to be unique to NeedCoolerShoes, we dont want Pikachu or Steve. Steve-adjacent "smiley beard" style faces are allowed, as long as the character clearly isn't Steve. (Same goes for Alex etc)

Winning artist will be contacted to confirm that their skin is licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0, and also to determine how they would like to be attributed on the site.

While not a rule, it would be nice if the skin payed homage to the original mascot in a way. Another nice-to-have is an iconic face, as the face of the skin will likely be used as the site's icon. Cooler shoes are also another plus.

  Thank you to everyone for participating in our skin competition! All submissions were fantastic, and it was lovely to see everyone's take on a new mascot for such a beloved site.
  
  
  Unfortunately, there can only be one winner, and that winner was Doofanator's skin. However, every participant will receive credit on the site, for participating in the jam.
  
  If you have an account on the site, comment your username down below, as we'll be adding a mascot jam participant badge to it at somepoint in the future.
  
  Otherwise, even if you don't have an account, you will be featured on a credits page on the site, as a thank you for your participation.
