While AMD does have cards that out performs NVIDIA cards it all comes by the display drivers.

People seem to think that your GPU ultimately defines your FPS, basically having a good GPU simply cancels out the fact that you have a slow processor. Of course, as you said, this isn't the case, especially with the multithreading used by many games these days.

And I'm not entirely sure, but I think the Athlon 64 X2 is multithreaded with 2 physical cores and 2 virtual cores, since two cores are placed on the same die with this chip. So, if I'm correct, the X2 has 4 total cores (2 virtual, but still cores).

I do believe you're correct. Your theory was also mine.

to my knowledge AMD doesn't have anything similar to hyperthreading so you'd just have 2 total cores. 2 physical and 2 logical.
1 physical core = 1 logical core, unless hyperthreading then 1 physical = 2 logical

tbh, i'd just scrap the computer and get a new one.
in this case, it'd probably be more cost effective.

the cpu is a problem, the memory is most likely a problem (3.5gb or 2.0gb are both problematic), and upgrading your graphics card will help solve one bottle neck of many others.

to increase your performance, you'll need to get rid of the bottlenecks.
without doing some sort of overhaul on this computer, I honestly don't see this PC ever reaching 30fps with shaders.

I was bouncing around 70fps when I took this, and my specs are much higher then what the OP listed... so i seriously doubt a 1.4ghz cpu will ever be able to crank out 30fps

Just a few years ago, no one used the term "Dev" now days it's just a rank for server owners to give someone when they can't bother doing the "hard work" themselves :\

aka if a server has a "dev" rank then it'll probably fail as the owner probably doesn't care too much about the server itself

i was on the server with the OP, he's going to close it because of the stuff i mentioned.

edit: yes the OP was using an "11 year old laptop" to host the server and play minecraft
idk what the specs are though.

From my experience....

1: Lowering your ram count below 1gb tends to lower FPS alot even if minecraft uses a max of 500mb or so.
2: increasing your ram over 3gb or so seems to lower FPS, unless your using 64bit java.
3:Minecraft does not require a beast of a graphics card, it seems the faster the ram the higher the FPS because if you press F3 and notice the "Mem" %, the ram fills up then clears itself, the faster the % increases occurs the higher the fps seems to go
4: having the cycle in #3 occur very frequently seems to hurt FPS alot, so less is better. aka having more ram seems to help more with that, I personally have settled with 2gb of ram, my allocated amount is forced to 2gb with this in the JVM arguments "-Xmx2G -Xms2G" XMX = Maximum allowed memory, XMS = Minimum allowed memory

Everything about my computer i've maxed out in one way or another.
running too many virtual machines at once caused me to hit my page file once. I tend to get close while compressing stuff with 7zip as I make the file selfextract and push the compression settings waay up (which usually just maxes out my CPU)
even more so, my motherboard came with free software that allows me to create ramdisks and sync folders into the ramdisk. going from an SSD to a 8gb or so ramdisk usually doesn't take very long but due to it being so fast to sync..there's rarely much performance gain :\

The OP can probably get away with laying 1000$ for a decent gaming computer.. or use this as reference and cut out the SSD (fast yet expensive) and modify the ram a bit.

Heeeey i beg to differ, In my rig I have 32gb and i've actually maxed it out and hit the page file.

What were you doing? Heavy CAD work/photo editing or running a ton of servers?

I second that motion..
had to read the blob twice to understand the issue.

To me it kinda sounds like an overheating issue.
ex: open up minecraft or run steam games and it shuts off.

I'd say try cleaning out the computer best you can.
like the vents on the sides and underneath the laptop.

With it, running bf4 at 1080 is a joke, and the games I can't run on max settings I can litterly count with my hands

I've stumbled across quite a few rank up plugins as a server owner.
AutoRank, Sign ranks plus, MasterPromote

My personal favorite is ServerSigns for that function.
you can have players pay with money or items to rank up via a sign, and you can lock the signs down with permission nodes
ex: new player can't rank up to 3rd highest rank via sign even if they have the items required.

Me and a friend currently have a 5gb minecraft server, which costs us little to nothing to run. (probably be more in the coming weeks)
We could use an admin if you happen to be interested. It's a new server and is still under contruction atm however.
