Creativity. Stubborness to get this stuff written down. And Steve *grabs collar* you are going to read about my worldbuilding when I finish that forum post. You are going to read, read, read, until you have read it all, understand? *releases you* Good.

Eloise_Lestrange Me neither! Which is why I'm worldbuilding instead :D

It's approximately two hours away from Easter where I am. So yeah. Give or take a bit, it might be a little close by.

*thinks* Statistically, the chances are that I won't do anything for it. I am incredibly bad at doing things at a time specified by other people.

Alright, it's been a week since my last progress report, so here we go:

Futuristic Jam: Almost there! Like, 95% done. I’ve got a test this week, so fingers crossed I can finish before the submission date.

Update: Test was moved to next week :D

Greenest of Beans Jam: Yeah... I think I’m gonna forget about this one for a week, or wait until I’ve only got a week left and hopefully my brain kicks into hyperdrive or something.

The only idea I’ve come up with so far is—guess what—another dress.

Oh wait, I literally posted that dress yesterday. swearing intensifies

I also tried making some weird SSPBL-style-looking things.

Honestly, I’m trying to avoid making what I usually make and actually challenge myself with this one (because it’s not like the jam is hard enough already, right? Green? Easy, right?).

I’ll be surprised if I manage to cook something up for this that actually meets expectations...

High Fantasy Character Jam: Not gonna lie, I’ll probably put this off until the deadline’s closer. I might even rethink my ideas and come up with more palettes. The writing part is gonna take time too, but there’s still plenty of time for this one.

Everyday Reshad-ish Jam: Dress in progress—sadly :(

It’s actually not that bad, at least for one of my dresses...

I’m testing out a technique I don’t usually use, so we’ll see how it goes. The skin already has a base, but I’ll probably tweak it as I go.

Skin Base Jam: All three are done! I could make more, but it only takes three, so...

Also, if you’re seeing this—check these jams out! Highly recommend. Join them!

This guy :I feel like there needs to be something at his legs—just something to add more detail. The whole red weird thing he's wearing is cool, but the black pants feel too plain for me. I feel like I need to add more. Silver might work... the metal bits for the boots could also work... I’ll probably add a hood, but I’m considering recoloring the red to brown and reshading to make a cloak-type thing instead...

ShadySteve The WIP I posted a few days ago. (original message had more colorful language)
Eloise_Lestrange • 2025-04-11 03:53:03

I don't know what that means :D but I'm going to go, vaguely medieval. Also wait... okay. Huh.

Well starting with legs, do you have buttons/clips/metal bits on the boots?

For the torso, broach, or some sort of clip type things, could work with that design. Metallic trims or decoration on his clothes could work fairly well, gold if you want to go fancy, or silver if it doesn't fit his vibe.

Most other ideas would require more modification, or actually knowing what the skin looks like now...

Eloise_Lestrange What's your theme? Because like, I can list all sorts of things that are mostly accessories.

ShadySteve • 2025-04-11 03:05:13

I literally can’t do that anymore—years of making skins with zero accessories, just shading, and now it drives me absolutely insane. I’ve legit hit burnout because I couldn’t come up with one accessory. With the current skin, I’m just sitting here like, “Hmm… a watch? Why a watch? He doesn’t even wear watches.” Then it’s, “Okay, okay… maybe a—uh—a stripe design?” Yeah! Genius! Because obviously the design needs stripes here, right? No? Aghhh. I’m not even stressed about space anymore—I’m just trying to think of anything that actually makes sense.

Eloise_Lestrange • 2025-04-11 02:52:49

Yeah. It really is. You don't have much space and like what suits this design? I just go, eh. Leave it plain most of the time.

Eloise_Lestrange • 2025-04-10 18:26:30

To be fair, while simple shading does exist today, it's generally a lot more refined then it was back then. My shading style isn't really all that simple anymore, but the general idea is simple.

Mostly.

I was about to say that my gamer skins don't generally do that well either, but 11-10 downloads on a two week old skin ain't bad. It's more the girls that do not-so-great. Dunno why.

I'm ignoring diamonds, since that has more to do with how many personalised feeds I pop up in then anything else...

I never do that. Because I always expect many words from myself.

ShadySteve • 2025-04-10 12:35:18

To be fair, I made this as a bit of a challenge—though it actually started because an old friend wanted a skin with that kind of shading. They liked it, but separating parts of the skin was a real headache.

White was tough to work with. As I shaded, it would just turn gray. The style used 15 shades of “white,” and the pants had another 15 shades of gray. With colors like green, you get more range—yellow-greens, bluish-greens, etc.—but white was the request.

A simpler style might’ve made it easier and cleaner, but at the time, most skinners I knew stuck with detailed shading, especially for commissions. PvP YouTubers were into that look too—it was definitely the trend. Yeah... let’s just say my "presence" probably wasn’t appreciated by the other skin makers at the time. (at least on Twitter).

I was mainly a PvP Minecraft player myself, and this was just the style people liked. Kinda surreal thinking about it now... 7–8 years ago. That’s why some of my early PMC skins had “PvP” in the title, though they didn’t perform all that well—at least mine didn’t.

Ended up writing more than I meant to, but oh well.

Eloise_Lestrange • 2025-04-10 07:53:00

Bruh. Past you really just went, yup. I'm going to do exactly what I normally do, but without the colour to create contrast! Yeah. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

Eloise_Lestrange Steve. You are wonderful, amazing even, But. For the love of all things good and holy. Show. Don't. Tell.
ShadySteve • 2025-04-09 02:53:37

Also, I’ve definitely heard that, but I’ve also learned that balance is important. (I remember commenting that exact phrasing on others' work during English class.) The problem with showing too much is that it can slow down the plot, which can be addressed with telling. But, of course, telling doesn’t let the reader immerse as much. I totally get that it’s a fine line to walk. Also, to be fair, I only had a few days to work on that and hadn’t written for a while.

Yeah, the the hat was throwing me off. I also realized that if I add hair, it might cover the back—which I think is a really standout part of the base. So, eh. Besides, I’m not even sure how else to shade the hat without making it look too similar to another one I made.

I'm bored. Here's some skin progress you didn't ask for

Futuristic Jam: skin in progress (like 80% complete, but needs more to it)

Greenest of Beans Jam: No concrete palette yet or idea (I've made one monochrome skin in my entire skinning career and it was a pain in the---)

High Fantasy Character Jam: 2 ideas, the WIP I posted or my initial idea. (Which has a palette ready but no design yet)

Everyday Reshad-ish Jam: palettes check, no ideas yet (I'm not using the base skin. Trying to avoid another dress, but it might come to that...)

Skin Base Jam: need to make 2 more (preferably not another dress)

If you see this, check these jams out! Highly recommend!

Eloise_Lestrange • 2025-04-07 00:32:17

I forget to drink water. Oh and sometimes when I write for five hours, I can't like write again for two days, and that's very annoying.

Yeah I don't get that, I mean sometimes I forget to turn my music on which I always realise only when I start to feel like I'm going crazy, and I can't like listen to streams/watch videos most of the time (sometimes I can though!), because that is too much, but music is just noise. Don't matter if someone is singing in it or not.

Although I guess when I do get distracted I can always go back into focus mode again. Since that's not a problem for me... so...

Oh right, that was the other reason, the hotkeys are in really dumb spots. It's like the I for inventory thing, I would have to change the hot keys. I think you can though...

Never forgotten. The Steve who shades, and puts PvP in the titles of his skins.

ShadySteve • 2025-04-07 00:22:11

My hyperfocus is fun, but really draining. Say for example I'm writing something, once I get going I go and it's hard to stop myself, heck I don't want to stop myself. Now I don't know if I have ADHD, though I suspect I do given some of my other I guess quirks I have. And consider me one of those people, I can't listen to music and simultaneously do something else, not even gaming! (unless I'm casually gaming mindlessly then yeah)

B for brush, d for dropper, and a clone tool you say?! Maybe I'll look into getting a mouse... it'll cut down the steps in my skin making process.

Skinseed does have that same feature, though its a select tool rather than a brush. Though you it doesnt save selections, only the most recent one.

Temporarily gone but not forgotten.

ShadySteve Oh, I don’t think I could do that. Either I work on the skin, or I’m not. If I break up my focus and start working o...
Eloise_Lestrange • 2025-04-06 23:59:08

I'm glad that I'm not like that, because otherwise my ADHD would end me. My brain flicks between things all the time, I can still go back and focus, (although eventually when I'm tired or otherwise incapacitated I will cease to be able to but that's another problem). I've heard people be mystified by my ability to write story while listening to lyric-involving music though. So it wouldn't be new me having weird focus powers.

I don't know the shortcuts for dropper and brush! I checked a while ago, but I've spent so long clicking between them, I couldn't be bothered. I mean there is a colour palette feature that by passes the need for that altogether! And I hardly ever use that! I have a few palettes in it, and it's super convenient! But I still don't use it :P

Oh yeah, there is levels to the clone feature, you can use any brush shape to clone a section (thus you can basically select anything) and then you have a brush which is just the cloned section, which you can use like any brush, for any function. Drawing, erasing, etc. And you can also save that as a custom brush!

So if you like me, have multiple skins with different outfits, you can copy the head faces, and paste them into another skin. Or you could just like have a bunch of the base shapes saved for some accessories or something. Either way it's pretty powerful.

I mostly use it for like finishing the back of a skin faster, when the front is basically the same. Or you know, doing the other arm/leg when they are identical but I uh... forgot to turn mirror on... heh.

Bye bye!

Eloise_Lestrange Well, today I've been spending like ten minutes, switching back to talking, spending another ten minutes... lol. To be f...
ShadySteve • 2025-04-06 23:36:53

Oh, I don’t think I could do that. Either I work on the skin, or I’m not. If I break up my focus and start working on something else, that’s it—it’ll have to wait until later or even tomorrow.

Fair enough. I mean, from 2022 to now, you’d think I’d have figured it out. I do know the shortcuts like dropper and brush :D, but I don’t really enjoy trying to shade on there. (I also don’t have a mouse because my laptop needs an adapter for those USBs, and I don’t really have much other use for a mouse right now.

Quick question: can you even copy a line of pixels on PMC and paste it elsewhere, like selecting it? I can do that with Skinseed, and it really helps. Also, copying is pretty quick—I just use "Save As" and rename it to something else, and there you go, a copy! As far as I know, I don’t think there’s a limit on that.

I need to go run some errands now.

ShadySteve Yeah, I don’t spend too long on skin sessions—maybe about 30 minutes tops actually placing pixels. The rest of the t...
Eloise_Lestrange • 2025-04-06 23:23:21

Well, today I've been spending like ten minutes, switching back to talking, spending another ten minutes... lol. To be fair I think if you looked at my normal methods, it's either several hours straight, several straight hours broken up by sleep, or a little bit at a time between doing other things.

Okay so I get to call you tech challenged? Because- I mean... that's a little... you started a while ago...

I just forget things exist! Got other things I'm working on, eventually the stuff I'm not working on gets pushed off the brain-table.

That does sound helpful, I mean the fact that PMC doesn't have a name-this-file-as-I-download-it feature is my biggest pet peeve. It makes downloading half-done skins from there (even finished skins) a pain since I have to go name them... agh.

Yeah, I don’t spend too long on skin sessions—maybe about 30 minutes tops actually placing pixels. The rest of the time is spent brainstorming and trying to figure out the shading. I feel like a mouse would be better for me, but I think it’d take too long to get used to making skins on one. I’ve literally been using the same app since I started.

I can totally relate to dropping projects that take too long—heck, one of my skins was about 90% done for over a year until I finally had a burst of motivation to finish it. The neat thing about the app I use is that I can make copies of the skin I’m working on, rename it, and tweak things easily. It’s super helpful when I’m making big changes or just need to scroll back through my progress.

*Switches back to conversation number one* lol. Oh you use one of those pencil things. I think I actually have one of those, it came with the kind of laptop I have, and a second one that has a pad but haha no. Hard pass on those things. I will stick to my lovely mouse that is nice and simple and won't hurt my hand if I use it too much.

For me, if a project goes on too long (exception made for overarching story projects, but that's different) it will be dropped and forgotten. Skins are great because they are pretty quick and easy to finish, at least relatively.

Eloise_Lestrange Well that's what rules are for. It might not make people stop, but it makes it less socially awkward when you boot th...

I use Skinseed with an Apple Pencil; back then, it was just my fingers tapping the screen. I use the PMC editor for palettes because it's way easier to create them—I can actually see the hex code and the RGB values.

For me, as long as I get something started, I’ll go with it. Even if it's just a simple arm or head complete, the skin will eventually come together. I'm probably more scatterbrained when making skins. I'll work on one part, then move on to another, maybe go back, maybe make another part, or maybe change something. Etc.
