UPDATE V4.1:

This update HUGELY optimized the pack!

- REALLY optimized server lag with many nearby shelves.
- Fixed bug where shield in offhand was getting deleted near shelves.

PLEASE UPDATE TO V4.1.1!!!
-The optimizations are really huge! It'll make your experience SO much better!

UPDATE V4.0:

I've updated the pack to V4.0, which is now compatible with 1.14. The items in your inventory will also now display as bookshelves instead of trapdoors thanks to a neat 1.14 feature of "CustomModelData," which is really neat! Please do update to V4.0! You won't regret it! (Also thinking of making a version 4.1.0 which would include all the new slab types).

UPDATE V3.0:

(You can download it here)

I have updated the pack to V3.0, and is now MUCH more reliable. The pack no longer uses spawn eggs, instead you can place the shelves with trapdoors and they will now have hitboxes, which you can use to break them!

You no longer need to remove shelves with a Shelf Hammer, you need only break the trapdoor secretly hidden inside them.

The New pack uses a New Resource Pack, and if you're seeing weird shelves, run the command: /function bookshelf:convert

To give yourself a bookshelf, run /function bookshelf:recipe/crafting/#TYPE

I have also added a bookshelf for EVERY Block that has a Slab Variant!

IF THERE IS EVER A BOOKSHELF YOU CANNOT REMOVE FOR SOME REASON, RUN THE COMMAND: /function bookshelf:force_kill
This is a V3.0 feature ONLY.

To Do:

- Utilize the Shelf Hammer from the other pack to allow for the creation of Corner Shelves
- Fix the raycasting on the placement a little bit to be more accurate, so that you don't have the possibility of loosing a shelf
- (Make a Video for V3.0 - This was planned, but due to time constraints I couldn't make it before releasing V3.0)

This datapack is awesome, cute little things like these are always appreciated.
I did find a bug on my end using the latest snapshot (19w11b) though. If I try to break a bookshelf, I get a warning telling me to remove all the items before breaking it which is fine, but it still drops a trapdoor.
You can basically break a bookshelf infinitely, and get infinite trapdoors (Wooden Trapdoors if you break a Wooden Bookshelf, Iron Trapdoors if you break a Stone or Stone Brick Bookshelf).
I can see where they're coming from because the bookshelves themselves seem to use those trapdoors as their base item or something like that, but them dropping said item that they're using as a base looks like one hell of a bug.

Leaving that aside, they look and work perfectly fine. If I could make one suggestion though, it would be cool if you allowed to put multiple instances of a block, even if they show up as an individual item inside the bookshelves. For example, something like using Shift+Right Click with a full stack of Cobblestone in hand to put it as a whole inside the bookshelf, and using the same combination while pointing towards the Cobblestone block inside the Bookshelf to retrieve that stack.

In any case, I really liked these bookshelves. Good work dude :)

No problem :)
Remember how I mentioned that the bookshelves were working perfectly fine? Well, they technically are. However, putting items in the lower row is kind of a pain in the behind :/ ...
Look at this: imgur.com/a/ebhEtzL

See how I'm aiming at my crafting table 1 block in front of me pointing down, and how the Melon Seeds are being placed in the upper row of items instead of the lower one? It's... kind of bothersome. I actually can't remove the items that I somehow placed before in the lower row, no matter how much I try, hahaha....

I REALLY wish I had a good way of fixing this.

It seems that when you're looking down at the bookshelf it'll work (Aka if the bookshelf is at your feet level), but when it's at eye level it seems to bug out and not want to work well at all. It's really strange and I have no idea how to fix it.... I've tried time and time again....

I'll give it another try though.

Thanks for the bug report! I'll try to patch it!

Also thanks for the praise! :)
-----
I would also LOVE to be able to put more than one item per slot, however the problem is that they're armor stands... So to do that I would probably have to manually program in EVERY possible amount for EVERY block. Even then I'm not sure it'd be possible :(
It's a feature I'd love to add, but something I don't think I can, unfortunately.

I will go fix that bug though! Thanks for the bug-report!!

Shields in the offhand disappear when you walk up to a bookshelf. Other than that everything is working perfectly. This was on the 19w11a snapshot.

AND! not only that, but I actually SUPER optimized the pack! It works WAY better than it ever has before!

Thanks for having me look back into it, now it's SUPER optimized on V4.1.1!

wait what? They full on disappear? That's awful! Thanks for the bug report!
I am still using version 3.0, but when I placed down a bookshelf, it has a weird texture, is this just because there's some texture pack that goes with this datapack that I don't know about, or is this a glitch?

Oh shoot, is it the stone bookshelf? Cause in V4.0 it might be broken in 1.13

But it'd work fine in 1.14,

Alternatively, if your'e on 1.14, and you're using the V3.0, you'll need to update to V4.0, as this fixes the issue (as well as adds new cool features! :D)
No, I remember it being a prismarine bookshelf...

Oh??

That's not good! That shouldn't be happening. What MC version are you on? Have you tried V4.0 of the pack?

I'd love to know what caused this. And hopefully to fix the issue for you.
I am on 1.13, I occasionally play it on 1.13.2

Interesting. Maybe you have an in-between version of like V3.0 with another version? Maybe your pack is up to date, but the resourcepack isn't? I guess you could simply keep yourself on V3.0 but download the resourcepack for V4.0 and that should fix your issue.
What resource pack? There are no resource pack links.

Wait, did you never install a resourcepack? Cause if so, that's your problem haha

you have to unzip the file that you download, and inside of that there's a resourcepack.
Ohhhhhhhhh, thank you xD

Not sure if it is an issue with another datapack (MCExp, MCExpHeroes, or Upgradeable Tools), but this (V3.0) isn't working. When trying to craft the bookshelf I instead end up with two knowledge books. This is in MC v1.13.2.

The two knowledge books should then transform into the trapdoors, the video's outdated, cause V3.0 updated LOTS of things about the pack. Also, if you get the knowledge books in your inventory, then maybe you have to run the command: /recipes take YOURNAME *

Oh shoot! Thanks for the bug report! Are you sure it's the datapack? Was it the only one in your world?

What does your log say?
So... I accidentally placed a shelf, it's in midair now due to my attempts to remove it, and yeah, I can't remove it. It's just stuck there. In the middle of a room. The hammer keeps saying there's no furniture there (no matter where I click). And I guess I didn't enable cheats on this world because I can't use the kill command you supplied below. Blargh.

That aside, while this datapack is a little buggy, it's a great addition! Interactive bookshelves are something I've wanted added to the game for ages. I just wish I wasn't stuck with this shelf in the middle of my main room in my base. :P

Haha, sorry about that! What you CAN do is open the world to LAN and enable cheats, but I'm about to release a new update in a week or so that will include a FAR better placement and removing system! I'm going to give it a hitbox with a trapdoor and make it so that if you break the trapdoor it will drop the bookshelf.

That version will be V3.0, but in any case, If you enable cheats you can do: /kill @e[distance=0..1,type=armor_stand]
Ah-ha! I just discovered I could turn on cheats by opening to LAN, right before I saw your reply, lol, and finally was able to kill the darn thing. Thanks so much, and I look forward to your updates!

I remember once there was a similar mod, no idea if it is still up-to-date yet, but looking at this fantastic creation I would say it is totaly obsolete now ;)

Would you happen to mean Bibliocraft by the way? I'd say it still has it's features... though it's a mod instead of a datapack, so I feel like this has a little plus over it :D

Hahaha,

well I still see a point to mods, if you look at my below giant block of text, the last paragraph.
What is the difference between the data pack and mods
  • chuckchuk
  • Level 40
  • Master Gent
  • August 10, 2018, 11:51 am
HUGE difference.

The Biggest plus of datapacks for me is the server application: If you have a server and want to download a datapack to the world, all you have to do is simply put the datapack into the world file and NO other player needs to download the datapacks or anything. This is apposed to mods where EVERYONE has to download the mods to be able to play on your server.

But another thing I see that's great about datapack is this: Since you're working within the rules of vanilla minecraft, you really are making little "mods" that are more vanilla-centric. There ARE mods like bibliocraft, for example, but how many times have you seen a modded server with JUST bibliocraft? If you're playing modded minecraft you will most certainly be focussed on those objective-based mods like Thaumcraft, or Witchcraft, Buildcraft etc.

Datapacks usually feel a LOT more vanilla centric: You're still playing minecraft for what it is: to build and do other things, usually the datapacks are additions to the vanilla experience instead of replacements for it. That's another thing I love about datapacks.

mods are STILL useful, however, as if you want to "replace" the vanilla experience, like I mentioned above, well mods are there for you! You have all these awesome mods that offer unique experiences and different objectives.
what is this texturepack?

If there's ever a problem, and you can't remove a shelf, remove everything from the shelves and run this command:

/kill @e[type=armor_stand,tag=Bookshelf,distance=0..2]
and
/kill @e[type=armor_stand,tag=Shelf,distance=0..2]

(If you're not op, ask a op to do this for you)

I loved this adatapack, but something strange happened when I was put in my world. I did everything right, but at the time of putting it on the floor, the item did not appear (it keeps the items in the air only) and does not want to be removed, because it says that it has no furniture in place, but it has, it just is not showing up. I wanted to know what happened happened to give this problem and if there is a way to solve

Thanks for the bug report! Is it this version of the pack?

And what did you do to make this bug happen? Just placed down the shelf and it broke? What direction were you facing, and what type of shelf?

EDIT:
So, I've tried placing every shelf, in every direction, and I haven't been able to replicate the bug. Were you wearing a shield?

Also, if there's ever a problem, remove everything from the shelves and run this command:
