Saplings on dirt/grass will plant themselves. This is multiplayer compatible. I'm open to suggestions for improvements.

How about making trees drop saplings at random so that we can have naturally growing forests?

Works on my server on 1.14.3 but sometimes the standard oak saplings dissapear on grass, might be a bug on my side though. It's working flawlessly on singleplayer hovewer.

I tried this on a Skyblock map in the latest snapshot (19w11b), and it doesn't seem to be working...? Or maybe it's simply not compatible with Hielke's TreeCapitator datapack, perhaps..?

I'm sorry it may not be compatible with 1.14 snapshots, the syntax for a command I've used may have changed in 1.14. I will be updating and re-releasing all my datapacks as soon as 1.14 comes out to ensure compatibility. My packs should be compatible with anyone else's packs.

Something else may be the issue:
  • keep in mind it takes ~10 seconds for saplings to plant themselves and if they aren't on dirt within that 10 seconds then they don't plant. I'd recommend just throwing a sapling item onto some dirt and waiting 10 secs to test if the pack is working properly
  • make sure the datapack is properly installed, instructions are included in the zip file (though you have other packs installed so you're probably fine, can't hurt to check). You can test this by doing /datapack list and making sure Smart Saplings is in the enabled section
