MC AutoMod

Now you can finally install mods easily on your Mac!

Don't you agree? Going through the process of modding Minecraft is often a pain. With all of the fantastic mods on Planet Minecraft, we are all modding all the time now. Here's your solution: an automatic mod installer. There are plenty out there for PCs, but Macs are often overlooked.

To install this program, start by clicking that download button. If a ZIP file appears in your downloads, open it (this doesn't always happen). Then you'll see an application (it may be inside a folder) with a robot (Automator) icon. Simply open this, and you are on your way to installing that mod you have always wanted!

How To Use

  1. Make sure Minecraft is closed.
  2. Open the file. It should start running in the background, denoted by a spinning gear in the menu bar.
  3. A "Choose URL" box should appear. If there is any default link in it, remove it.
  4. Paste in the URL of your file (scroll down for more on this). Click continue.
  5. Wait for your Mac to say "Minecraft modded successfully", and for the spinning gear to disappear. Go ahead and open your newly modded Minecraft!

Finding the download URL

Finding the link to a mod's download URL is often complicated, since there are many different scenarios.

Example 1: If you're choosing a mod to download from Planet Minecraft, look for the download link. Right-click it, and click copy link. Easy! Note that this does not always work if you chose the File Mirror button.
Example 2: Let's say a mod was after an (Ad link removed), so you would click "Skip Ad" to instantly download it. Right-click the "Skip Ad" button and choose copy link.
Example 3: This time a mod could be downloaded through MediaFire after (Ad link removed). Click the "Skip Ad" button normally, and then right-click the "Download" button in MediaFire so you can click Copy Link.
Unfortunately, there is no standard way of finding the "Copy Link" button. One tip, however, is that after you copy the link, it should end in .zip.

Q: Can I install multiple mods at once?

A: Yes, just add more links into the URL list.

Q: Can I change this program myself?

A: Yes, since it's a simple Automator application.

Q: Is this a full-featured program?

A: No. I'm still working on it, but now it's in a good enough state for functioning properly (hopefully).

Q: There is a bug in your program!

A: PLEASE leave a comment or send a private message, as I always want to know how to improve my creations.

Q: Will you make this for Windows?

A: Not for a while, anyway, since there are already so many automatic mod installers out there.

Q: Does this work for every mod?

A: No, not currently. If a mod asks that you put part in the "mods", "config", or "resources" folders, this program currently has no automatic way of detecting that. Sorry.

Q: I like this program!

A: Please leave a diamond!

Anyway, thank you for using MC AutoMod. I encourage you to leave a comment (or PM) if you have feedback of any kind. Hope you enjoy your time saved on modding your Minecraft!

1 Update Logs

0.1.1 : 03/09/2013 8:42:40 amMar 9th, 2013

Update already? Yes. It is a simple, but fatal, bugfix. Changes:
à à à à à à à à à à à à - Changed unzip script so it works with any username.
à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à - When file was unzipping, it looked for my name. I fixed this mistake so it would always look for the current user directory. This bug was truly fatal, unless you had my name.

Sorry to everyone who have already downloaded this! Remember, if there's a still a fatal bug, please let me know. Thanks.

Applescript, Automator, or ApplescriptOBJC (Cocoa-Applescript)? Perhaps we could collaborate on coding something? If so, you can reach me at: [email protected]

Can you add my mod to it? http://www.planetminecraft.com/mod/slimymod-requires-forge/

Then ill use it at my easy download section :P
I can't actually add your mod to the installer, as it works for many mods. However, I can explain to do it!
1. Open it.
2. Click add and insert this link: files.minecraftforge.net/minecraftforge/minecraftforge-universal-recommended.zip
3. Click add and insert this link: www.planetminecraft.com/mod/slimymod-requires-forge/download/file/4972565/
4. Click Continue and wait. You're done!

I hope that this works out for you!

Hmm, haven't seen that happen yet. Please reply: can you say yes to all of these questions?
  • Do you actually have Minecraft installed?
  • Do you have Java correctly installed?
  • Do you have OS X 10.7 or 10.8?
  • Have you never tampered with Automator's files?
  • Is your Minecraft currently vanilla?
  • Does the error occur before the URL screen pops up?
i already have mods loaded into my minecraft and yes the error pops up before the URL does.

ummm...i did everything u said and im still wondering how to get the mod working while playing minecraft...i have the mod,and my computer said it was a succsess...just dont know how to actually use it in the game
I'm not completely clear on what you asking, but I think this relates to the mod, not the mod installer. Depending on what the mod is, look at it's webpage, to see what it does. If the mod didn't install successfully, if that stuff doesn't happen, then come back, since there is a problem with the installer.

Once again, I can hopefully making this compatible with Leopard later. But for now... sorry.

you got me excited about something like this now it doesn't work D: come on
Why does it not work? Where does the problem occur:
  • Before anything opens (no gear in the corner or anything)
  • Before the box pops up
  • After the box pops up, while it's processing the files
  • After the program is complete (e.g. Minecraft isn't modded at all)

Please reply with this and any error messages. Thank you!

LOL dude why'd you use automator to create this?
I REALLY wanted to get this program published. My ultimate goal is to code in Objective-C (Cocoa) in Xcode, but my like has been very busy lately. What matters is the concept. This works, right?
What OSX version is this on? Lion 10.8.2?
Yes, what it's tested on anyway.
Ok, thanks!

I can't seem to run the program... I'm using Mac OS X Build 10K549. I reset my computer and my router, but it still wouldn't open.
I have a feeling that the problem here my be OS X version. Automator got some major upgrades in OS X 10.7, which may prevent it from working. I recommend getting Mountain Lion, anyway. I suppose that this program will not work on Snow Leopard any more. I apologize. As I said in that other comment, my ultimate goal is to make this a standalone application, which should work on Snow Leopard. But for right now: sorry.

I downloaded forge but when i download other mods they just vanish and don't download
Hmm... there may be bugs with installing multiple mods at once. Are you installing Forge and the other mods simultaneously, or in two different sessions? If two different sessions: try force updating your Minecraft and doing multiple at once. Let me know if that worked!

i already have mods do i need to force update or do i leave it on my desktop
  • If you want to put mods on top of your existing ones, use the program as normal.
  • If you want to start a whole new set of mods (aka delete your old ones) then you must force update first. (If the program was allowed to force update for you, that would be illegal.)
oh yeah it had trouble opening the mod installer
