The Renault 12 is a small family sedan released in 1969 by the French company Renault to fill the gap between the Renault 6 and 16 models. A station wagon and a sports version of the Gordini followed in 1970. A simple car with a proven engine provided the company with wide coverage of the lower and middle segments of the market[​1].

The Renault 12 began as a project code 117 and was intended to replace the Renault 8 and 10. The new model was positioned below the Renault 16, which was a very progressive car for its time thanks to its hatchback body. But conservative buyers needed something more familiar and the new car became a traditional sedan, albeit with front-wheel drive and a modern body, to attract a wider audience.

In the summer of 1969, man first set foot on the moon. And in the same sublime cosmic atmosphere, the Renault 12 was shown on the eve of the Paris Motor Show. Twelve examples of the brand new car were presented to the press in a room with twelve zodiac signs on the walls. Thanks to the haze released over the presentation hall, the cars seemed to float in space[​2].

The Renault 12 was produced in many different versions around the world. In France, the last car left the assembly line in 1980, while in other countries, derivatives of the base model were produced until 2006.
