The slanted structures are nice and overall a nice build. But up close the builds appear to be really simple in design and detailing.

Won't argue with any of that ;)
We had 24 hours and decided to focus on scale and atmosphere over player sized detail.

I try to focus on a bit of both for me. As in game thats what the person is going to see on a limited render distance is the upclose stuff. So i try to please player expierence over the overall build, granted i have done large-overall builds before.
I agree depending on what it is I want to make. Here, we chose a larger scale to we could have more to the plant and therefore make it more noticeable, and with a larger scale comes larger detail. Larger detail always looks plain up close in game because you are too close, it's like going to a 1:1 scale structure and standing literally on the block only seeing 5 blocks total just about.
If you take a few steps back I think you will find the detail works quite nicely in that it shows the shapes and form that we want to use without making too much of a busy composition for our eyes to process. A lot of the detail does use stairs and slabs to aid in its shape, it's just harder to notice because it is not the stair itself making all the detail in that area, the stair is likely just making a line or a larger surface that when viewed in composition forms a larger scale detail.

For other builds that do not need any larger scales to better execute concept or are more for a larger overall setting in a 1:1 scale (that means there is just a larger map, even if the larger scale map is literally bigger, in scale terms, the larger scale build can be smaller, such as 1 large scale building and a small scale build of 5 buildings, the small scale build in this sense is the larger build) this also applies to commissions and adventurous maps. You will find I, or we, use the scale of detail more catered to the typical distance from the build you would be, such as walking down a 1:1 scale street.

Its a common concept in painting to make strokes only as fine as they need to be in relation to how far away it is meant to be seen. I wouldn't call it building for renders as we do indeed have form, detail, depth, and color variation. I would call it building for viewing from a little more of a distance than your typical scale implies.

Not trying to argue or anything, but, i build on a 12 chunk render distance as my computer is average (and thats with optifine) So it looks good when you see the overall build, but that wont really mean alot to the average person who sees this in game on a server and only has a 200ish block range.

None the less, like i said overall nice build for 24 hours.
Although there are some places where the ruins process made a hole that somebody didn't bother filling back in, so I won't deny anything there xD

Depending on how many people were working on it Aka. I built "The Dining Hall" (500x800 including moutains) that goes from level 13 to 256 (ill admit i used large detail) in 3 days. Not really 3 days of grinding either. So if I had multiple people i feel player -level detail could of been added. and be done in 24 hours.

I think giving it more detail would make it feel over detailed since the scale is so huge. Though, it's just my opinion.

You wouldnt need to use stairs or slabs or anything, just cool designs with fullblocks would be enough. something to look interesting in game.
