Well, here's my second (and far superior) challenge map. I used a variety of map editors, including MCEdit and WorldEdit. It's a large map, I couldn't NOT do it. It's actually a pretty easy map to survive on, there's trees, water, and underground resources, so of course I have to set some goals for you.

Easy Goals-
Deforest an entire island (there's 5 smallish ones, it's just slightly time consuming)
Acquire 5 iron ingots (anything from the super awesome giant cavern doesn't count)
Make at least 5x5x5 and well lit house (interior is 3x3x3)

Medium Goals-
Acquire 5 gold ingots (anything from the super awesome giant cavern does't count)
Locate and explore the seeecreeet ice island
Locate and explore all 5 mountains (the really steep ones with snow and ice)
Find the super awesome giant cavern

Hard Goals-
Acquire 5 diamonds (anything from the super awesome giant cavern doesn't count)
Make a map and fill it out
Make a two story house out of LOGS with at least 20 windows
Put at least 10 bookshelves in that log house with 20 windows
Do not die. Ever. EVAR.

Impossible Goals-
Find the hidden grass island in the nether. This might take years.
COMPLETELY explore the super ultra uber massive giant-arse cavern under the snow island. It's really big, in case you hadn't gathered.

Le Rules-
You may destroy/place any blocks you want, it's a survival map
You may NOT hack/mod for ANYTHING
You may not X-Ray, fly, use minimaps, etc.
Play on AT LEAST Easy difficulty, it was meant to be on Normal or Hard, but AT LEAST Easy.
Added content mods ('Mo Creatures, Better Than Wolves, Apothecarium, etc.) are an eh. If the mod doesn't really give you a serious advantage, go ahead and use it.
You MAY go to the nether, be warned it's kinda weird. I screwed it up.

Le Hints-
Sand can ONLY be found under the water by the starting island. Important for the window goal.
There is an image showing the location of the super awesome giant cavern. Suggested you try and find that spot.
Reeds are rare. If you have a map, visit the five small islands. Two of them have reeds.
The hidden grass island in the nether- you probably aren't ever going to find it.
Other than that there's no real TRICKS to the map other than tricks to the actual game of Minecraft.
