Designed to remedy the shortcomings of their previous design, the Palisade class destroyers, the Oak Ridge class has a lengthened and heightened hull, meant to accommodate the planned armament changes needed to make the destroyer more effective in its role. First off, a new type of turret was added which held a higher velocity gun meant to aid the ship in its ability to combat larger, more heavily armoured vessels. This however was not the main issue with the prior class, that being with anti submarine and detection capabilities. To this end, depth charge launchers were fitted to the stern of the vessel as well as special depth charges that could be launched via the torpedo tubes. In regards to the detection abilities, the extended hull also meant that the bridge could be extended. This also meant that radar and sonar could be fitted to the vessel, increasing its potential for varied operations and its ability to carry out any necessary tasks required of this class of vessel.
