General Characteristics
History up to November 1908:
Mikasa is a pre-dreadnought battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Built in the Vickers Shipyard in Britain, she was ordered on 26th September 1898, laid down on 24th January 1899, launched on 8th November 1900, and commissioned on 1st March 1902. She was named after Mount Mikasa.
At the Russo Japanese War, she served as the flagship of the 1st Fleet under Vice Admiral (later Admiral) Heihachiro Togo and participated in the Battle of Port Arthur (9th February 1904), Battle of the Yellow Sea (10th August 1904), and the Battle of Tsushima (27th May 1905). On the night of 11th to 12th September 1905, she sank in her moorings while in Sasebo after a magazine explosion.
She was refloated on 7th August 1906. After two years of reconstruction and repair at Sasebo Naval Arsenal, the ship returned to service on 24th August 1908 as the flagship of the 1st Fleet. She participated in the 1908 Fleet Maneuvers and the Imperial Naval Review as part of the 1st Division of the 1st Fleet under Vice Admiral Baron Goro Ijuin. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Mamoru Okumiya from the 10th class of the Imperial Naval Academy who commanded the ship since 24th August 1908.
