A bulk freighter designed to carrier loads of raw materials between mining colonies and manufacturing facilities, the BF-48-CP is considered a mid-size transport vessel. Designated by the "-CP" this transport is also equipped with light cargo holds and quarters and facilities to transport passengers on long journeys.

The BF-48 is one of a large series of modular bulk transport vessels. While the series comes a range of lengths and engine capacities, this model is capable of carrying up to 48 bulk cargo modules each capable of holding 2,500 m^3 of bulk metals, minerals and fluids at or below atmospheric pressure. Modules are also available for the transportation of sensitive materials and light cargo. While the ship can carry 48 modules, modules can be stacked along the length from the back forward in smaller quantities. This series of vessels also possess 4 separate bridges to improve docking maneuvers with visual confirmation from the best vantage point for each facility. Control can be switched from one bridge to the next as modules are being docked from stacked from different or based on the approach orientation to loading or unloading facility.

While various configuration modifications are available, the most common is the CP. This designation fills the lower decks of the forward sector of the ship with cargo holds and a small shuttle bay. The upper decks are laid out to house passengers in individual and paired economy rooms and accompanying facilities. These facilities include a large cafeteria and medical bay equipped with surgical and medical/tissue synthesis machines.
