When rendering maps from our community's server, we had some problems finding North.
So I decided to build a compass rose big enough to be seen clearly on the maps!
It's 268 blocks tip to tip and made up entirely out of obsidian and glowstone. If a player stands on one point he can't see players who has passed the middle.
This was obviously done with op powers, as one of the materials are very hard to make big structures with and the other doesn't spawn naturally on outdoor maps.
It's built entirely in game (No MCEdit) with only a quick reference picture done in MS Paint mostly just for arranging the geometry and making a nice typeface on the letter N (Times New Roman, should you wonder).
It took about 5-7 consecutive hours to build, first with only me doing outlines and then with two friends (see special thanks below) helping me fill it in.

Sadly, the glowstone didn't show on the map so I'm thinking of putting
torches on every glowstone for it to show on the generated maps (Whereby
I've marked it as 90 % ready).

i hate it when i can't find directions, lol:P
On our server the problem was mostly that posting the generated maps with North up wasn't really happening. But I know what you mean. ;)
