Cottal Fishworks

Over the decades, the nature of the fishworks has continuously evolved. Originally, it was merely an open space for smoke-drying fish in the open air. This was followed by the construction of small huts where fish were processed more systematically, leading to the eventual establishment of the large smoking hall. The final stage of this development is the introduction of breeding tanks, where cod are now farmed directly.

Since the earliest permanent settlements in Nordera, Cottal has played an essential role in the region’s food supply, particularly for the barren north. Although Cottal possesses fertile land, its true treasure lies in the cod population, which uses the Jause Lake as its largest spawning ground. Situated directly on the lake, Cottal was always focused on cultivating and exporting this valuable natural resource. While Cottal also exports other foodstuffs, smoked fish is particularly advantageous, as it can be preserved for long periods and transported over great distances. Without Cottal’s supply, a city like Swartbyen could never have thrived. Today, there are other food exporters in Nordera, yet Cottal remains the backbone of the industry. In Nordera, trade is often described as revolving around the three great trade routes: the Fish Road, the Coal Road, and the Iron Road. Of these, the Fish Road was originally the most important and traces its origins directly to the Cottal Fishworks.

Im Lauf der Jahrzehnte wandelte sich immer wieder das Bild der Fischwerke. Ursprünglich waren es nur ein Platz für freiluft Räucherplätze. Es folgten erste Hütten wo die Fische dezidiert verarbeitet wurden und schließlich die große Räucherhalle. Am Ende der Evolution stehen die Zuchtbecken, in denen der Kabeljau direkt gezüchtet wird.

Seit der Sesshaftwerdung in Nordera ist Cottal von enormer Bedeutung für die Ernährung von Nordera – insbesondere für den kargen Norden. Zwar gibt es Cottal fruchtbares Land, jedoch ist der wahre Schatz die Kabeljaue, welche im Jausesee ihr größtes Laichgebiet haben. Cottal, das direkt am Jausesee liegt, war von Anfang an darauf ausgerichtet, genau diese natürliche Ressource zu fördern und zu exportieren. Zwar exportiert Cottal auch andere Lebensmittel, doch gerade Fische lassen sich durch die Räucherung lange lagern und damit auch auf weite Strecken transportieren. Ohne die Versorgung durch Cottal währe eine Stadt wie Swartbyen nicht möglich gewesen. Heute gibt es zwar neben Cottal auch andere Exporteure für Lebensmittel in Nordera, trotzdem trägt Cottal immer noch die Hauptlast. Insgesamt spricht man in Nordera oft von den drei Handelsstraßen; der Fischstraße, der Kohlestraße und der Eisenstraße. Die Fischstraße ist dabei ursprünglich am wichtigsten gewesen und hat seinen Ursprung bei den Cottaler Fischwerken.
