The Merdorn Monastery is the largest monastery of the Adanos Church. It is a fictional monastery on the RP world, without any real corresponding structure existing. I was inspired by the monastery from Kingdom Come: Deliverance I, which is why I also added a construction site extension, but it is not a copy or a reconstruction. The monastery is located on the northern edge of the Großjarlstum Feuerfeste in the Abbey Passstret. It is the largest monastery of the Adanos Church.

Structure Description
The monastery complex consists of several sections. In the east and southeast are the construction sites for the current expansion. Here, one can find workers’ houses, workshops, and unfinished structures. A road from this area leads into the monastery forecourt, where a vineyard (sweet berries) is located. Roads also branch off toward the west and north.

Approaching from the east, after passing through the construction overbuild, the bell tower and the monastery church are located on the left. The latter has a permanently open main door. In the western side aisle of the monastery church, there is a passage into the actual monastery building. The concept of this monastery is designed so that outsiders are generally not meant to enter the inner monastery and are only allowed access to the infirmary and the church, which is why these are the only entry points into the monastery.

The monastery itself is mostly square in layout and features a small garden at its center. On the ground floor, there are the herb garden, monastery garden, kitchen, dining hall, dormitory (which extends over several floors but is not connected to the other floor structures), and a library. In the northwest, there is a stair tower that allows access between the floors. There is also a basement containing storage rooms, a dungeon, and a wine cellar.

On the first floor, there are various workrooms, namely the alchemy laboratory, a scriptorium, and the wine press. In addition, the abbot’s chambers are located on this floor. The alchemy laboratory has a staircase leading down into the infirmary. This infirmary is separated from the rest of the monastery by a road and can only be accessed from the monastery via the overbuilt passage where the alchemy laboratory is located.

On the second floor, there are three additional workspaces: the laundry, the tailor’s workshop, and the candle-making workshop. There is also access to the roof on this level. The stair tower continues upward, but there are no further floors; at the top of the tower is a scriptorium used for monastery administration.

The previously mentioned bell tower also contains a staircase. The stairs leading upward go only to the bells, while the path downward leads into a crypt, at the end of which there is an embalming chamber.

History (RP World):
The Adanos faith was strongly present in the Reiba area for a long time. With the settlement of the Norderians and the territorial expansion of the petty kingdoms of the Brantners and Weißlichter, the proportion of Adanos followers declined significantly. Eventually, only the ice nomads of the Varir tribe remained truly devoted to the faith, though they too increasingly came under the influence of the early kingdoms. While the Varir remained numerically stable in their own land—the Varirmark—there was growing mixing and assimilation in other regions. In particular, cultural aspects of the Norderian Reibaners were adopted, though many people remained faithful to the Adanos belief. Toward the end of the 360s, Jarla Vinya I Brantner of Bergmark also professed her faith in Adanos.

She decided to dedicate a significant portion of her wealth to establishing an Adanos Church, thereby constructing the first religious building of the Adanos Church and initiating the transformation of an unorganized folk belief into an organized church. The wooden church she commissioned is said to have been the direct predecessor of the Medorn Monastery. Even after the death of the childless Vinya, no efforts were made to suppress the Adanos faith—it was simply no longer actively supported.

During the early 4th century, the great Scandian invasions began. Although Bergmark was only relatively lightly affected, it is assumed that these events already contributed to the region’s economic decline. In 337, the Scandians of the Nordmeer Kingdom, led by Ragnar the Great, ultimately conquered all of Bergmark. It was likely during this time that the original church building was destroyed. Ragnar ruled the land in a relatively peaceful and integrative manner and eventually had an Adanos monastery built on the ruins of the church—this marked the actual beginning of the construction of the Medorn Monastery. However, after transferring power to his son, Prince Kasper, the still unfinished monastery was handed over to the Beliar Church, which later significantly contributed to the collaboration of the local population against Nordmeer rule.

At the beginning of the War of Unification, the previously completely unknown Rhobar, as the chosen of Innos, conquered Bergmark. Although Adanos was not his god, he returned the monastery to the Adanos Church. Whether this was done out of pure goodwill is debatable. During the War of Unification, the monastery functioned more as a frontline fortress, as it lies directly at the southern end of the Passtret (pass road), which connects North and South Nordera. The water mages disapproved of this, but there was little they could do. After the conquest of Argarnur at the northern end, Rhobar promised large donations for the expansion of the monastery. He fulfilled this promise by granting the monastery leader not only a generous donation but also elevating him to the rank of abbot and granting the Passtret as a fief to the monastery. This sounded more generous than it actually was, as the land is very mountainous and the monastery itself already represents by far the largest settlement in the region. Otherwise, the Passtret is largely vast, uneven, and infertile land. More importantly, however, the Adanos Church thus gained a vassal within Rhobar’s new Grand Kingdom of Nordera, and thereby a certain degree of influence. The Medorn Monastery developed into a kind of center of the church and continued to expand steadily.

Like all monasteries in Nordera, it also became an important economic enterprise. The priests cultivate grapes and produce wine, keep bees and make candles from their wax, grow herbs and food, write books, and sew clothing. However, the most important development was the infirmary, which earned a reputation as one of the best places of healing in Nordera (even though Nordera in general is rather known for its lack of medical knowledge). Wine also continues to play a major role, as despite the limited cultivation area, only the Adanos Church—alongside the Innos Church—is permitted by a still-valid law of Rhobar to produce wine, and therefore also purchases grapes from other regions. This prevents a total monopoly by the Innos Church.

During the Second Egyptian War, the Medorn Monastery returned to one of its earlier roles—as a border outpost. The surrounding village was destroyed, and large parts of the complex were damaged, but the Egyptian attackers were never able to fully occupy the monastery.

After the war, reconstruction slowly began. The monastery has not yet fully regained its former splendor, but it continues to grow steadily. Only recently, Abbot Ingo III allocated a large sum for the expansion of the monastery—supported by a donation from Großjarla Vinya II Groth of Feuerfeste.

Comments are very welcome!

Very nice, thank you for sharing, misterich. I really appreciated how the rooms were quite immersive and functional, ike the... not sure what to call it, but it looks like a funerary preparation room, with the bones and tools... as well as the vaults, and so on. Reminds me of Necrom, from TR.

Thanks a lot - The Medorn Kloster was a project with much more time than most my creations get, even if I think I have created better buildings in past, but I like it. The interior was a very much work and finding ideas for some rooms was not easy. I don't know the English word for the room you called "funeary preparation room" but ChatGPT translate the German word to "embalming chamber".
