Good day everyone! In a week’s time I will be back at university so I took the past month to relax. Still I didn’t want to go without giving you guys something, so here it is.

This locomotive means a lot me; since there is one at a pedestal in a park nearby she has been present in a lot of my childhood memories, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! These were also the first locomotives to run on the Corgo Line, before being replaced with the bigger E200 class.

Their very characteristic design with a low small boiler and tanks for a inferior center of mass and mechanical complexity form the mallet compound design sure made for a nice challenge, however I was able to take some close up pictures myself, so this should be one of my most accurate builds!

This project features the CP E160 series, with full cab and interior details, buit to 3:1 scale.

As always, I hope you like it and to get your feedback! Thank you!

Make sure you give a look at the many renders.

HISTORY

Built between 1905 and 1908 by the German company Henschel & Sohn, these 10 locmotives were ordered by the Minho and Douro division of the State Railroad Company, CP, for exclusive service on the Corgo Line. The line, which was being built at the time, was the first of the many Douro Valley meter gauge branches that would traverse north. Following the river valley, the track bed went through very aggressive geography, having turns as sharp as 75m radius and inclines as steep as 25mm per 500m.

That was what made for the requirement of such a design, the first of its type to be introduced in the country. The 4 cylinder compound system, with high pressure on the back ad low pressure on the front gave her the power to climb, while the mallet articulation allowed her to negotiate the turns.

They did their first run on May 12th 1906, hauling the first train from Régua to Vila Real on the Corgo Line. Needless to say, she was a success, what she lacked in speed, averaging about 40km/h (though enough since the lime was mostly limited between 30 and 35), she surely had in power. Capable of hauling the long mixed passenger/freight trains up to the Spanish border. The small coal bunkers were compensated with some planks around it, and also inside the cab. It was usual for locomotives to carry one extra ton of coal on the cab floor, since it was scarce and after the 50’s all main line engines ran on fuel oil, so coal had to be specially shipped for the meter gauge branches.

Eventually they were dispersed among other branch lines as the CP E200 replaced them on the Douro valley lines, ending their career at Porto’s Trindade line, Tâmega line, Tua line, around the 70’s.
