Evangelische Hauptkirche (Protestant main church) is the main church of Rheydt aswell as its most notable landmark.

It was built from 1899 - to 1902 to replace a smaller church, the old protestant church of rheydt which originated from the middle ages.

Architect of the newly built church was Johannes Otzen A well known architect from imperial germany which was known for his unusual styles of historicist church buildings.

The church was built in neo romanesque/Gothic renaissance style, its not clearly assignable to a certain architectural style.
In its first years the church appears to have happened a more colorful appearance with the Tower and facade made out of brick, and the main building out of bright stone bricks. As the years passed it received its darker color which it still has today, today even more intense due to war damage.

The Protestant main church of rheydt did not leave the war unscathed. - During the british terror bomardements of Mönchengladbach and Rheydt on the 12th may 1940 aswell as the massive attacks during the end of the war the church was heavily damaged, and ruined. However it was rebuilt almost completely the only left over trace of the bomdarment is the missing spire on the southern tower. The main tower was taller than today.

It is located on Adolf Hitler Platz (Marktplatz)
