Overview:
  • This project implements a bidirectional converter between the IEEE 754 half-precision floating-point format and a scientific notation BCD format entirely in vanilla Minecraft using redstone logic.
  • The map is compatible with Minecraft Java Edition 1.18 and all later versions.
Floating-Point Format:
  • Operands are encoded using the IEEE 754 half-precision floating-point format, comprising a 1-bit sign, 5-bit exponent, and 10-bit mantissa.
  • An online IEEE 754 converter is available for converting floating-point values.
Scientific Notation BCD Format:
  • The SNBCD representation consists of a 1-bit sign, three BCD mantissa digits with an implied decimal point after the first digit, a 1-bit exponent sign, and a 3-bit binary exponent.
  • Sign; nibble 1; (decimal point); nibble 2; nibble 3; exponent sign; 3-bit exponent
Supported Operand Classes:
  • Normal numbers
  • Positive and negative zero
  • Positive and negative infinity
  • Quiet NaN
Supported Operations:
  • Floating-point to scientific notation BCD
  • Scientific notation BCD to floating-point
Exception Flags:
  • Invalid Operation
  • Overflow
  • Underflow
  • Inexact
Rounding:
  • Results are rounded using the IEEE 754 Round to Nearest, Ties to Even rounding mode.
  • The rounding mode is fixed and cannot be configured.
Compliance:
  • The implementation is based on the IEEE 754 standard but does not provide full IEEE 754 compliance.
  • Subnormal numbers are not supported.
