Usage
History
The Harradox-class gunship was a Cuax Technologies design developed alongside Syvatii Unlimited as support craft against strike craft and light capital ships. The ship was equipped with a significant quantity of weapon systems, including four heavy laser cannons, both standard and heavy blaster cannons, two Pao NTSI-901-model anti-fighter laser turrets as a defensive measure, 60 Terasz-ID40 multi-role missiles, and 9 SIU T1050/2A anti-ship torpedoes deployed via two launchers. All of these weapon systems combined allowed the Harradox-class to take down capital ships alone, as well as entire squadrons of TAUFOG strike craft. The design would not end up being produced in significant numbers though, as the increasingly advanced Xexon line of strike craft used by GACIAF were more than sufficient to establish total control of space with strike craft, and the Harradox-class was almost never useful.

Though, when you said strike craft, this was the size I had pictured.

In my little universe, a strike craft is a starfighter, bomber, or similar-sized drone. I can see why it would sound like larger ships.

Ah, mine goes: fighter < strike craft < pinnace < corvette. I suppose that strike craft and pinnaces might be redundant but i differentiate between the two by saying pinnaces are generally too large for a hanger bay and usually need to be docked but have have no jump drive.

Right. My use of strike craft is as one of three types of ships - strike craft, support craft, and capital ship. Every military ship falls somewhere in those categories.

What about escort ships? When you write support ships, I picture supply ships, tankers, transports, C3 ships...that sort of thing. Obviously, with capital ships I imagine main line battleships, cruisers, carriers and dreadnaughts. I would think escort ships would cover corvettes, frigates, light cruisers, and escort carriers.

Anyway, I'm not trying to change your system, it might be a language difference thing, but if I had to break my ships down into general family groups, I'd say Strike Craft / Escort Ships / Capital Ships / Support Craft.

There aren't really "escort ships" as in a type of spaceship. There are support craft and capital ships designed to escort various sizes and types of other ships, but escort ships are either capital ships or support craft. For instance, gunboats are a support ship used to screen strike craft and thus are always used in an escort role, but they are categorized as support ships. Similarly, escort-model ships are simply well suited to protecting larger or smaller ships - the Balkon escort cruiser is typically seen beside carriers, but is a capital ship and will also be used as a front-line combatant against other cruisers and battlecruisers independent from other warships.

I do apologize for forgetting this, but logistical craft are their own type of ship as well. Stuff like freighters and fleet tenders and all those. Support craft refers to a warship or gunship which virtually always operates in conjunction with capital ships, and complements their abilities and reach as opposed to replacing it. This includes gunships, gunboats, corvettes, marauders, and communication ships - all of these need strike craft and capital ships to fight a structured enemy fleet.
