HMS Rodney was a Nelson-class battleship of the Royal Navy, launched in 1925 and commissioned in 1927. She was 216 meters (709 feet) long with a full-load displacement of around 38,000 tons. Powered by steam turbines, she could reach speeds of up to 23 knots (43 km/h or 26.5 mph).
Rodney’s most distinctive feature was her nine 406 mm (16-inch) guns, all mounted forward in three turrets — a unique layout influenced by naval treaty limits. She also carried twelve 152 mm (6-inch) secondaries, AA guns, and strong armor: up to 381 mm on the belt and 406 mm on turrets.
Rodney is best known for helping to destroy the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941, pounding her at close range. She also supported Allied landings in North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. After the war, she was decommissioned and scrapped in 1948.
