Hi there! welcome to my entry for the Interior Decorator Contest!

So this is the first ever contest I'm participating in and I've really enjoyed it, I found some difficulties working with the sterotypical US suburban house but I think with some influences from my childhood home I made it work.

Because there's a 20 picture max, I decided to put all the pictures I made into this not so orderly imgur album ifanyone is interested.

Now follows a somewhat detailed look into my process, if you're not interested, you can look at the pictures, have fun!

The main house

Ground floor

I decided not to change too much about the layout, I did decide to board up the closet immediately left of the front door and added a wall to the other side of the stairs. Because I found the ground level to be too open though I added a hallway to the bathroom and broom closet which also gave me a room to work with on the backdoor.

I decided to give the living room a nice blue and spruce brown look because I'm a big fan of the look of spruce in minecraft, I made the hearth a bit less modern and more rustic by adding bricks and granite to it, which I really liked. The kitchen however I liked to have some modern feel by adding an island but I liked the rustic feel of the furnace top and spruce trapdoors.

For the back of the house I decided to step away from the blue terracotta wallpaper look and decided to go for some white wallpaper, concrete was a bit too much for me so I settled with mushroom stems, which have a nice texture and don't look to pristine or white.

1st floor
Again for the first floor I didn't change the layout really, I did decide early on that I wanted atleast 1 study, so that brought me down to only 2 bedrooms.

The master bedroom of course was a must, and I decided to keep it quite orderly and pristine, this was partly because one of the walls was also directly connected to the bathrooms so I couldn't go for any crazy wallpapers.

The bathroom was a fun challenge I really wanted a bath and shower combo like I used to have in my childhood home, even though it wasn't the most practical, but with the toilet and mirror cabinets it ended up becoming a little cramped, but I think it worked out.

The study wasn't much of a challenge, I decided to go for a nice white terracotta wallpaper with wood panelling, because I couldn't exactly get it working with the hall being there I decided to make the wall 2 blocks thick to keep the wallpaper consistent on all sides of the room.

I don't think there is much else to be said about this room, I'm pretty happy with the globe and desk, even though it's not the most practical in minecraft standards (because of the slabs) but it looks nice and that's what it's about.

I knew for the teenager's room it had to be cut off from sunlight dark, clothing everywhere, messy desk with the jewel of the room being the computer, you could say I was inspired by a special someone being myself, because that's basically what my teenage years looked like. I liked the little addition of the hoop above the laundry basket, just a nice little detail.

The attic

THIS PLACE NEEDED AN ATTIC, yeah attics are cool, they're usually filled with forgotten junk and I thought it would add something to the whole build, I basically covered the roof tiles with wood and made some vertical supporting beams, some cobwebs because no one ever goes there and kaboom.

The Garage

The garage was maybe the most troublesome place I built, no idea what people put in their garages, I did decide to knock out the stairs because the 1st floor of a garage was really not going for me, I didn't think it fitting and I didn't like the stairs in the middle of the garage so I ended up stripping it.

For the interior I eventually decided on cabinets because that's apparently what people primarily use their garage for.

Unfortunately because of the way I built the cabinets for looks I couldn't actually fill them with the junk I wanted to fill them with but that's alright, the vibe still goes strong.

I changed the car to a nice pickup truck, cars are really not my thing so I'm happy it turned out as well as it did.

The workspace is the stuff of my nightmares, it took me so long to get a workspace that was somewhat believable, but I think in the end, with the help of some of the new blocks it turned out alright. I erected some walls to make the workshop into it's own little corner, and allow for some wall space to put racks on for the tools.

The Garden

Front garden

Building the garden was an absolute joy, I quite quickly finished the garden around the driveway around the front of the house, I decided for some hedges which are always nice to build and an idyllic wooden arch with plants growing around it, like I always wanted in my garden. Aditionally I planted some nice red flowers in front of them mixed in with a few low grass bushes to mix it up a little.

For the left side of the driveway I decided a simple mowed field would be nice, I felt that if I continued the plethora of flowers and hedges all around it would really take away from the overall look of the house and just become to busy, so I balanced it with a quite boring grass field. Since grass field are boring, I decided to add some interest by making it freshly mowed.

Back garden

For between the house and the garage I liked some verticality in my garden which I achieved by simply raising the beds, I for inside the beds I decided for a few nice rows of 2 block tall flowers, berry bushes and leaf blocks, the difference in heigh and texture I think made it interesting to look at and not too monotone.

Behind the garage I decided again not to make it too busy, a simple field that was in the process of being mowed was a good middle ground. I was so proud of this lawnmower, I am the worst at modern day machinery and I spent hours working on a design that worked, the most difficult challenge was definitely making the handle diagonal but I think the slender acacia trapdoors did it.

I did decide to make the bit between the garage and the fence a little overgrown, like the part of the garden no one really likes and doesn't really wanna draw any attention to anyway.

Seating area

The garden had to have a nice seating area for warm summer days, a simple wooden table with thing and slender acacia doors did the trick for me, not too fancy I added a parasol because we have one in our garden and it's a must for summer days that get a tad too hot.

I decided to make it feel a little more lived in my adding a tap, and wood logs being stored against the wall, just small details that make it feel like people us the space day-to -day makes it come alive.

Next to the seating area I wanted to create a kind of oasis of plants where one can unleash all their gardening dreams, a nice oasis of peace with a path that drops down a little to make the only thing in sight be plants and nature.

Building process of this part wasn't all too exciting, it's your basic organics, don't make shapes too hard, don't add too much of the good thing and give it some space to breathe.

Trying to also tell a narrative about how these people live in this house and what kind of quirks or habits they have was a fun thing to try and incorporate into the build. I hope you enjoyed reading my build process, I had a ton of fun building it and I will definitely be there if another contest hits.
