Kennedy Space Center
This build of the Kennedy Space Center was done for the 50th Anniversary of the Launch of Apollo 11 on the 16th of July 1969. I know I'm just a little bit late on actually posting it but some stuff got in the way.
The build includes the Saturn V Rocket, Mobile Launch Platform, Vehicle Assembly Building, Launch Control Center, and various Parking Lots as they appeared on the morning of July 16th 1969. That morning obviously was the launch of Apollo 11, and 4 days later on July 20th 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon. The Saturn V itself was a technological marvel of its time, and perhaps even to this day. The five rocket engines that powered the massive rocket are still today the most powerful engines on the planet. The Saturn V was 111 meters tall (363 feet) and was broken up into 3 stages which was integral to allowing it to transport individuals across greater distances. The Vehicle Assembly Building and Launch Control Center are still being used to this day by NASA.
Remembering Katherine Johnson (1918 - 2020)
I also wanted to take this time to talk about and remember Katherine Johnson, an often forgotten African American woman who worked on calculating the trajectory not only Apollo 11, but also for the Mercury Program which put the first American in Space (John Glenn). Many who worked with her knew she was integral to the success of all the programs she worked on. She continued to work at NASA following the success of Apollo 11. She helped with the beginning of the Space Shuttle program and also worked to plan a mission to Mars. In 2015 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many contributions to NASA and to Space innovation. She passed away last month on February 24th 2020 at the age of 101.
If there is more to be done to this build it would be to build the actual launch site which is several miles away from the area that I chose to build. Other additions would probably include other various Kennedy Space Center buildings outside of this central hub.
NOTE: I do not claim ownership of any images on this page except for the ones of the build, these images were included for educational purposes
