Hello everyone,
I'm back again with another US destroyer build. Expect a tonne of these over the coming weeks. And yes, these have already been built, I make them ahead of time and delay my uploads so I've always got something to share :)
This week we have the Mahan-class destroyers. Based on the hull of the preceding Farragut-class, these feature a radically changed superstructure layout permitting the installation of an additional quadruple torpedo launcher, albeit without increasing broadside firing weight. They also have slightly altered bridges and other crucial details, meaning these ships took much longer to build than I first thought.
The primary armament is identical to the Farragut, including AA, except for the additional quadruple torpedo mount I mentioned. I used Wargaming's Mahan model as a base, although because I wanted to represent the late war Mahan with the fifth gun replaced by a Bofors, among other changes, I needed to make many modifications, so like before, I had to use other resources to help me complete this ship. I'm very happy with the result, though and I love the camouflage on this one.
The size is identical to the Farragut as they share a hull. One historical piece of trivia for you is that a Mahan-class destroyer is the star of the book "The Good Shepherd" by C.S. Forester which Tom Hanks' Greyhound film (great movie, watch it) is based on. However, because no Mahan-class destroyers survive, they use the USS Kidd (DD-661) of the Fletcher-class to represent the fictional USS Keeling (Greyhound) in the movie, which is fair enough.
